Pills
OK guys I need to pick your brains. As I have said in a earlier post I am taking the guys at work out fishing on a charter boat or boats this week end . The gal at the charter company calls me today to let me know the river sucks and we won't catch any fish .......But the BIG BLUE is RED HOT !
So here is my question what kind of pills should I buy for everyone ? Last thing I want to do is go get my whole crew sea sick and have them all phone in sick on Monday ! Not to mention the fact they are all bigger and younger then me and will ...well you know !
So does anyone out there who has been on the rail praying to YORK have any pill advice ?
Thanks guys !...........Big Dave
PS. I will give you all a report on Monday ! if I'm not sick hehe !

Re: Pills
Maybe I'm paranoid:
I would play it safe and have them provide there own. You don't want one of them to have some side affect and blame / sue you for what ever happens.
I would advise them to ask their doctor or pharmacy to recommend something.
I know this isn't the answer your looking for.

Re: Pills
EVERYTHING you wanted to know about sea sickness and curing it.
http://www.yachtsdelivered.com/seasick/sick0.htm
I personally like the original (chewable though) Dramamine. Taken properly and re-dosed at 3.5 hour intervals, works like a charm.
I dissolve the pill between my cheek and gum for quicker entry to the bloodstream. It has to get to your small intestines before you absorb the pill taken orally. Could be over 2 hours depending on your digestive system. I think that is why people don't think it works. They take it an hour before leaving or just after leaving the dock, and they harf anyway.
I set my watch for 3.5 hours and when it goes off, I dissolve another.
That said, I'll bet the river is full of silvers this weekend.

Re: Pills
Dramamine - Good point from small fry, suggest to them that they get their own.

Re: Pills
Big Dave -
You will get tons of responses here about the seasickness pills, and they probably do work.
But you heard it from me and I challenge you on this. GINGER!!!
It was discovered Ginger was used by ancient mariners and I will not even attempt to try to explain why. Nor do I care.
But when I read about this several years ago I decided to put it to the test. I personally can get green just looking at the Octopus at the carney, so I was really filled with trepidation about going out of Brookings on a charter.
Well, my buddy and I forced a couple of teaspoons of Ginger down our throats (not recommended - yuch!) and went to sea. There were 12 fishers plus a crew of two that day. 8' slap seas of the worst magnitude. Stinky diesel fumes.
10 of the 12 passengers chummed that day. The captain, first mate, my friend and I all felt fine. No actually we felt great because we reeled up almost everyone else's catch since they were all to sick to fish. That really convinced me.
Since then I have seen it work several times for others as well. On a Halibut charter in Alaska a friend, who was wearing a patch and had eaten seasickness pills, started turning green. I got out my box of Ginger Snaps and told him to down a few. He ate about 4 and within about 15 minutes he was perky again.
So, I will say that you have low risk by having it aboard, and it may just be the ticket. Do the other stuff if you choose, but try eating some Ginger before you go or when you start feeling puny and you may be really surprised.
You can find it in capsule form in health food stores, you can eat Snaps for a snack or you can even drink Ginger Ale. I would not eat it straight out of a can and wash it down with a Coke like we did that first time, but that even worked.
Another thing about seasickness in general. I believe you can talk yourself into it. Think "I won't get sick" instead of "I will get sick". Stay away from looking down. Try instead to focus on fixed points of land in the distance. Do not go under the deck and stay away from fumes.
I no longer seem to get seasick, but I am still not any good at carney rides. Maybe I'll try some Snaps the next time it comes to town.
Good luck and have fun!

Re: Pills
Another medication that you can buy over the counter at most pharmacies is called Meclazine(sp), or the generic equilivant. I bought 100 tablets for about seven bucks and had no problem out in the "briney blue" and man, I can get as sick as a dog in just small swells! Just another option that might make a fishing trip a lot more enjoyable!!

Try candied ginger (bulk at Winco), it goes down easy.

Re: Pills
Once back on land the sea sickness dissipates fairly rapidly, anyone who uses it as an excuse to get out of work on Monday is pulling your leg. Big thing is to make sure and tell everyone going on this trip to get to bed at a reasonable time and to absolutely abstain from alcoholic beverages the night before heading out. You'll get lots of advice on pills from everyone, Dramamine is the most widely used. A pill the night before is said to help (it will certainly help you sleep anyway) and then one in the morning before leaving the docks. I've never been sea sick but this is the protocol I use for those in my family that are subject to sea sickness.

Re: Pills
Hogmaster, I really want to believe that ginger is the answer!! Friend of mine that fished commercially in AK told me about it, so his experience and yours/others on this board, leads me to believe that there is something to it.
BUT I will offer this advice on how NOT to take ginger on big blue - 6:30 am, no food in stomache, Busch light, raw ginger root slice. I lasted about an hour after that.
But I was really . I will not let that cast my judgement on the virtues of ginger as a seasick remedy.....

Re: Pills
Meclazine - inner ear
ginger - nausea
start 1-2 days before you go out to get it in to your system
next step is to keep the land from rocking when you get off the water

Re: Pills
My doctor recommended Allegra, a non-drowsy, anti-histamine and expensive allergy medication. He said it works great for his wife, who gets motion sickness in the car. In addition, he said that Allegra is the updated version of Seldane which at one time was the most widely prescribed motion sickness medication and is no longer available. I have never gotten seasick until an especially rough charter in July. The next time out I took the Allegra just to be sure because I was on a brand new boat for a sea trial. I didn't get sick but then again I usually don't. HTH

Re: Pills
PeterMac -
Well, I have to admit that you are the first case I have heard that the Ginger method did not work for. On the other hand;
1) Ginger root might be slow to digest
2) No food and Busche Light at 6:30 AM?
I guess I would challenge that to any pill on the market to do any better. Try the capsules next time with a little food and I bet your results will be different.
One other thing that I didn't mention earlier about Ginger is that is has no side effects like getting drowsy or lethargic.

Re: Pills
Bypass the pills and get the your doctor to get you the patch. It goes behind the ear, put it on the night before works for 3 days. I have used it and it works much better than the pills.

Re: Pills
I have to say the patch might work for some but not for all. I have seen many people with the patch get sick.
My suggestion is Dramamine. It has worked for everyone that I know that has tryed it.
Take a pill the night before and another when you gt up in the morning. Then take another about 30 mins before you go out as long as there is a few hrs in between that is. Take some out with you and if you think you really need them take em every 3 to 4 hrs. If you feel sick it is usually too late to worry about a pill
As with anything always read precautions on the package first!
Just my .02
Jon

Re: Pills
For years I have been uncomfortable fishing on big blue. I usually stopped short of chumming, but it was very uncomfortable. Then this year Susan and I went to Sitka to fish for chinooks very early (mid-May) and found conditions to be terrible. We actually took wave spray over the pilot house of the boat on anchor. Brutal. We expected to be seasick every day.
But no seasickness at all. I couldn't believe it. The reason was Sea-Bands. They are the answer for us.
For those of you who may have used them in the past without success I want to point out that they have changed. They are much tighter than they used to be, and after a few hours they actually become uncomfortable. At the end of the day you end up with an indent mark that stays around for several hours. Perhaps for that reason they seem to work much better for us than they used to.

Re: Pills
The only time I called out for Ralph out in the Pacific was after a friend told me of ginger root capsules. I barfed up ginger tasting yuck. We went out of Depot Bay for a bottom fish/crab trip. 1/2 hour into it, just about everyone was calling Ralph. Even the deck hand lost it. The sea was very choppy that day, not just swells, but gut wrenching chop. Then, everything spinned in my head. I could not even stand up, I had to lay on the deck of the boat for 5 1/2 hours, because every time I would try to get up, I almost passed out from dizziness.
I took two of the capsules every two hours, starting the night before. This is the ONLY time I lost it at sea.
I ate light, a muffin and some coffee a couple hours before the trip, and nothing but saltine crackers after calling out for Ralph.
I say, forget the ginger root. The captain and a couple guys that took dramamine and meclasine where the only ones to not look for a guy named Ralph, and the only ones to limit (because the rest of us couldn't fish).
The funny part of this story  , is I offered to put on my MasterCard everyone's fare if the captain would just take everyone back to shore immediately. No go, so I called out desperately to see if Ralph was available for the next eternity.
To sum it up, DON'T USE GINGER ROOT!
My 2 cents.

Re: Pills
Your best bet is to advise them to eat a huge breakfast prior to going out. This will give them something to hurl If you can have them eat sometheing fish based as this will really help the chum slick you get going.
With boat limits you want as many down as possible so that you (having taken your dramamine ) may catch the whole boat limit!
