I'm close enough to St. Helens to post on this topic. My boat looks like itr has no floor in it because it doesn't. 22" Sea Ray when its complete. Currently I can be seen in a 20' alumaweld super vee with bait boy. Dustin how do you have time to fish, study, chase females and still write on this board????????????

Hello, we're out here where the city limits don't go, and I don't know how tight a radius you're drawing around good 'ol St. Helens but we are in your county.

We fish a little higher up on the river, so you can find us between Sand Island and Frenchmans Bar, typically. Then it's down to the coast where we hang out in Netarts and fish the Tilly system from outside the jetties up through tidewater.

You can find us rambling around in a 179 Hewescraft with some Hondas hangin off the back and often a big dog or two leaning over the front.

Just checking in, I think most of you locals know who I am.

You'll see me on the water in a 16' olive drab valco sled, or a 10' mini drifter, or a 16' duck sculling boat, or a 16' skeeter bass boat.

I'm also the neighborhood egg ho

I live in Canby, but I keep my boat in St. Helens at the Marina there. We have a 22.5' Blue and White Sea Ray with a blue top and two ifish stickers on the side windows.

The name of the boat is "Rarin' To Go."

I will be on the lookout next weekend!

Did you guys hear that one big ship yesterday who almost ran over two boats....scary.

I am not sure who was at fault, the big ship or the guys anchoring in the channel.

It was exciting nonetheless!

Chacal -

IT IS ALWAYS THE BOATS ANCHORED IN THE CHANNEL WHO ARE AT FAULT.

I know there is a great deal being written about anchoring and doing it away from the crowds or taking the "outside" spots etc...

But understand a freighter that draws deep draft not only has right of way in the channel, it has the ONLY way. We do not want to be reading about oil spill clean ups from a ship that tried to dodge out of the channel because of some ignoramous who left himself in harms way.

Please know the channel, everyone, and stay out of it!

Drummer, good job to get the call in your area. I am not there so I won't describe my Red Alumaweld Sea Dory with the 100 Horse Merc pump and 8 Horse Johnson kicker.

Instead of starting a new thread I will just share my adventures this weekend here.

The Skunk Streak is over!

My pole, my father reeled it in (poacher), caught my first URB Saturday. Finally there is fish blood on the boat!!!

That rod had strikes all day and out of four strikes we had two fish. Here is the whole story.

We decided that we had to change something, so I went to Joes and bought about $50 of wobblers. The entire day I spent washing and trying new wobblers -- then we found the magic lure.

So, we get a 15-20 lbs hen in the boat -- we didn't throw the anchor rope and drift, because we didnt' have a system down and were scurrying around and by the time I figured out what to do -- the fish was at the boat and I netted it.

We left the lure on and WHAM! another huge strike. I started to play this one and my dad made the decision to not break free from the anchor. We got it up to the boat and as he was trying to net it the leader broke (weight got tangled in the net) and we lost the fish and the lure. Of course I don't remember what I had on there, so much for repeating history. :depressed:

The fish looked pretty dark so we are guessing that it was a TULE. It was bigger than the other fish we caught tho, so it would have been nice to have at least one of us limit out.

As we left for the day, my dad forgot to get the landing net off the top of the boat and of course is flew off and sank. Then the suction cup transducer we had flew off and the wire broke. Very expensive fish.

I went to Joes Sunday and replaced our landing net (I got a bigger one being an optimist) and picked up some more lures, but it looks like things were pretty much depleted. So I am pretty sure I didn't get another magic lure. I will probably try Fisherman's later this week.

I was out yesterday and the skunk continued. The only action we saw was a couple of boats almost getting run over by a freighter and hearing the big ship call the boat numbers into the sheriff. Of course the smaller boats went right back out to the middle of the channel after recovering their anchor lines.

I don't know what others are using, but we haven't had a strike on a blue and silver or a green and silver wobbler. Most of our luck has come from the multicolored wobblers. We are fishing from 77 to 73 in the St. Helens area.

I am planning on a Friday afternoon/evening trip -- the tide is outgoing until 6:30 p.m. and then staying on the boat (docked at the slip) until the morning. I am reluctant to sleep on the boat anchored due to my inexperience.

Our fish were caught on outgoing tide and it was trucking on Saturday.

I am from Scappoose, I fish my 21' Alumaweld Super Vee with Mercs on the back. I have my boat named now "FISH HAWK". I also have my guide business name on the side. Fish Hawk Adventures. Many of you may know me from another boat it was a 22' blue and white dory named OSPREY.

I fish Coon Island in the spring, the pickett fence for summers, Cowletz, Kalama, or Columbia City for Falls

Met Dan, Aaron and I pretty sure I recall seeing Live to fish at or around Sand Island this spring. I was the guy with the skiff and three young boys plunking off of Sand Island this spring.

Wish I could afford a bigger boat but children, finances and better judgement keep me from taking on another payment to get a BIG boat. Need to save up. Have a couple buddies that treat me to some big water fishing during the year. Have to admit that banking did not hurt our results this year so I don't sweat it very much.

I'm sure I'll spend some quality time again off of Sand Island but I grew up outside of Astoria and I really enjoy that area because I know it so well.

See ya out there!

Released 2 and kept 2.

Howdy Neighbors,
I live in St. Helens and fish out of a 20' Boulton, Blue canvas, a Yahamamma W/ Merc kicker. Boat named Second Chance after a ticker glitch. The ifish decal is on the transom (port) where Marie Will told me to place it.
I started the springer season w/ 60-70 hrs before pay dirt. Now Then, first time out on Thurs. (5th) I limited out. Buddy did not get a hit. Fri.(6th) different bud, but exactly the SAME results. Man, those two days made me feel like maybe I be learn'n to fish dis area. Fish caught in the Columbia City area with a FREE Simon given me by the makers wife to try. First time in the water and Bango. Oh, by the way, I forgot to mention that I used a downrigger cause I don't like to fish w/ 16 oz of lead. Where are all the ifish decals on the other boats?????? How far back from the clip do you run your lure (wobbler I assume, I've never heard of the Simon), and how close to the bottom do you set the weight?

I guess I could be considered a St. Helensite. Although I actually live in a rather 'Elite' region known Warren. Ya see, in Warren we have been working on plans to install a sidewalk. Something the pure St. Helens folk kinda envy.
We've also have long range plans for running water...and when those wirey things get all the way down Hiway 30...we are considering puttin genuine 'E'- leck - tricity all over the dang place. Oh ya, baby...Warren...home of the sophisticated, home of the enlightened.

No...we DON'T have the "Big Candle". That's Scappoose you du.mb head

Now Hogtide, keep it civil, were all in this (county) together  .

Remember, Scappoose does have the 'Sauerkraut Festival' (really hard to put cap letters on that one, honestly).

And, at the other Scappoose festival they do bestow on a local lass the esteemed title of (really, I'm not making this up) Port-o-Fun Princess  .

Well, I woulda posted a bit earlier, But after I got home from rebell's house I had to turn the valve off that's pumping sunshine this far out

Dustin, If you read rebell's post above, dis-regard it, And stay as far away from that "ritzy" neighborhood of warren as you can w/fresh, blood free eggs, you just keep bringing them right over here

And rebell, don't be trying to sway my source, I'm not able to catch them myself, so I need all the help I can get......

Think golf ball size baits, and bobbers down!

This is a great idea Dustin, would be nice to know a few more locals who brave the columbia. I'm usually out in a 15 foot red smokercraft lodge series boat with my cousin around 77 for the fall run, you might see me brave it in a 12 foot aluminum boat out there also..some people say I look kinda funny in such a small boat because I'm 6' 5"...I just let them eat dirt as I drift on by with a fish on..heheh

I've been fishing this river for over 30 years now...totally ripped it up this spring at laurelwood...gotten my biggest keeper sturgeon this year...and done pretty good with the fall run. Hope to see some of you all out there soon.

For all those that are 21 older (sorry Dustin), we ought to set a date to have a couple at Johnny's in the near future? Or maybe Sunshine pizza so those that are age challenged could come? Maybe sometime next month after Ifishstock and the deer opener?

Hey jellyhead.....sorry but I had to try.

From what I hear we should all be giving dustin a call. Sounds like the kid can fish.

Trick.... I was just on the phone with plucut and he had your same idea. Sounds great to me. plugcut just moved out of the area but is a true columbia county fisher. Lets make it pizza so dustin and any one else under 21 can make it.

I wont be out saturday, I have a ride along with the sherrifs dept that night, should be fun.
Oh and Aaron, your on buddy
You only beat me that one time we went because you knew what the bite felt like and I didnt.
We'll see who wins this time
Let me know when the waters good, I'll get the gas, I think you have some bait and i'll let you in on a secret spot to pick up girls! Meg better not see that, i'll be in trouble
After ifish stock would be a good plan,
end of September? start of October? Or later due to deer season

Dustin,

I'm sure you'd recognize rebell's ranger bass boat if you saw it, I doubt you've met him, but he knows fish, spiny or slimy  He knows em'

Let's see.....

Bass fishing virgin.....Broke yer' cherry on that (BTW, what's a topwater bass bite feel like, that you can't feel? )

Winter steelhead virgin......Broker yer' cherry on that

URB virgin.... I don't know what you did, but I'm glad that cherry's broke

If we can get in rebell's boat in Tillamook, you'll learn more in one trip than I've ever taught you...... He has a serious home court advantage there.

Just don't count on me taking you out springer fishing, I gotta keep some tricks in my bag.

As far as a local pizza/brew get together goes, I'm all for it. Let's set a date and meet some of the local faces.

Aaron

 Hey Rebell if you set a date don't make it on a Saturday in September or Oct. Try a Friday night for a better turnout.
HEY remember no body goes to the HOGS head hole. Gotta keep some secerets. Good luck on Saturday.

Thought I'd pipe in also. Good to meet you neighbors! Pizza sounds like a good idea. Count me in.
You may see me in my red North River with a black top and honda kicker.

Anybody know how the fishing is outside of St. Helens?

I am going to be fishing this afternoon and tomorrow...maybe even Sunday out there by marker 73. Just spent another $50 on lures and dying to see what works.....

Chacal.
