That is a very brave and/or a very stupid man. Cool Pic!

Anybody recognize that town? Could that be a full body mount set there for the pic?

Agreed. He could be sitting atop a full body mount. I've seen full body moose available for pictures. I've also heard of the ancient moose riders, but this gives it a whole new twist. Hope the elk doesn't get an itch he needs to scratch.

The email said, "Lander, Wyoming: We presume that it was taken in the early 1900's." Who knows if it's true.

As Bear Claw told Jeremiah Johnson: "Elk don't know how many feet a horse has."

But that there Elk only appears to have three feet.

My vote: Photoshop.

Obvious photoshop. Look at the gap between the elk rump and the saddle blanket.

3 legged elk?

Hmmm....
Cool pic though.

Its not too hard to believe. After all , there is all kind of video and photo footage of the ol logger in maine or minnesota i believe, who has a moose he trained in the trace, to log out logs alongside his draft horses.

Look close where the front legs hit the snow.......there are 2 legs, just lined up almost perfectly. Leg position agrees with the stance as well.

Maybe your right. Thanks to the majic of google, I found an article in Popular Science (July 1920, pg.56) that talks about some fella Buck McGee and his riding elk.

Hope the link works...

They've done it with Buffalo (Bison) also!

Have you ever seen the (rodeo) act with the guy who has the trained Long Horn cattle?

He's got those things trained so they climb up a ramp onto the top of a trailer and up onto a ramp on the top of his truck's cab!

It's amazing what you can do with animals and enough time to train them up.

Yes, but the rider would be an idiot if this was real. One jerk of the head to the right or left from the bull, and that man's head is skewered.

Yes! This was indeed taken in Lander Wyoming in the early 1900's. This is my home town, I have seen the original photo and it is not a hoax. It is understandable that one would second guess it though. Another interesting fact about Lander... We held the very first Rodeo in which people payed to see it. And the winners were payed. The first in the country!
Some more stuff about my town, Lander Motor and Marin was the first Kawasaki shop in the country. Paul is still the owner he's a stand up guy. Way back when the Oregon trail was running west to Cali for the Gold Rush The most accessible rout over the mountains was through Lander. Over a Pass called South Pass. The trail is still visible from the Highway. There is a web cam if you would like to see it, look up South Pass web cam. It is a view from the top of Red Canyon. There is also a Lander Wyoming Web cam And I think it shows the building behind the guy and Elk to the Right. That building was a bar then and is a bar now! The bar is the very same one too! Most everyone who traveled west by wagon came through this area. They had to to get over the mountain. If you didn't already know we have world renowned fishing as well. I am taking my nearly 3 year old to Wind River Canyon after Lunch today. Last weekend we pulled out a 32 inch Rainbow. Not really uncommon although most are around 27 inch. The Brown Trout get real big in that system as well.

The Building to the Right of the guys head is the bar I was talking about. I Took the photo that is my Avitar last Summer. We don't ride Elk anymore but some of us have been known to ride our Horse to the bar now and again still 100 years later!
