rod holder question
I need to find a new rod holder set up for my wife. I am currently using the Scotty's rod holders. My wife is disabled (She has a bad left leg and uses a cane to walk). Her problem is that when a fish strikes, she first has to stand up and get set before she is able to remove the rod from the holder and set the hook. She missed two fish on Saturday and says we need to figure something out. A lot ot the time I will set the hook and hand the rod back to her after she is up and in position to fight the fish. She doesn't like this. She wants to do it all. I would like to find some type of rod holder that I can mount in a position there she can get it out of the holder and set the hook while still in a seated position. The Scotty's and Fish-On type are a bit clumsy for her. Any suggestions? How about some of the tube type rod holders like the Big Jon, Angler's Pal, or Tite-lok holders?

Re: rod holder question
I don't recall the name, but I think it's sure set, anyway they where designed for sturgeon fisherman in mind. The rod holder rotates with the rod when setting the hook. My hats off to you and especially your wife. Great to see ladies out with the guys enjoying a sport togeather. Good luck finding a solution.

Re: rod holder question
brshooter,
You might have to have something made. I am thinking of a device that you can lock into place with a quick release pin. With the quick release pin you can store it until needed and then when you are ready you can set everything up for your wife to have the rod and holder closer to her.
If you are interested I can help in figuring something out. My Brother in law does custom work on aluminum and stainless steel. He is a master in figuring things like this out. Let me know.

Re: rod holder question
Brshooter - I have used the Quickset rod holders and they are great. If they are mounted on the rail, you may still have the same probelm.
What kind of boat are you running? I have rod holders set up on the rail and inside the boat on the side tray rail. These are about knee high and right in front of you as you sit in the seat. This set-up keeps the majority of the rod inside the boat so that they don't get removed by close passing trollers or O.C. hog liners. Hook sets are easy and you don't have to stand up first.
Is there anywhere to mount a rod holder about halfway up the side of your boat? A tray perhaps?
Another option is to mount a rodholder on a reinforced milk crate, then throw a couple of bags of sand or shot into the crate. You can set this anywhere and it will stay put as long as your rods are long enough to have some give in them.
Good luck and glad to here she enjoys fishing!

Re: rod holder question
Thanks for the suggestions everyone. The Quickset holders look like they may be the ticket. I should be able to mount them on the inside of the boat where she can reach it when sitting on the side bench seats.
Blast and Cast,
Check your e-mail.
Thanks,

Re: rod holder question
I made a rod holder by bolting an aluminum lampshade ( the kind that comes on a clip light such as a farmer uses during calving season) onto a piece of plywood with some foam inside the shade. Makes a cone shape; the rod butt goes in at the top where the light bulb would be. This sits in the bottom of my boat (it's a kayak) and is 360 degree functional. TH rods made me a spin-fly rod that balances well as a fly rod and there's 7 inches of cork below the reel, this is ideal for my setup because I can switch to flycasting at dusk and still use the rod holder. Can't stand up in this boat and have to be able to grab the paddle at any time.
When fish hit, I'm usually paddling and this rod holder lets the rod follow the fish around while I'm putting up the paddle. Sometimes the BOAT follows the fish around.
If you needit to be gunnel mounted, or inboard, but higher up than what I'm talking about, consider making a holder that is hinged on one side and has a tension snap-down handle on the other. When she gets a hit, she can grab the rod, unsnap the holder, and lift straight back without having to lift forward the way the commercial models go. She has to grab the rod first, though, or it will disappear when she unsnaps it, and you mightl get an earful!

Re: rod holder question
You can get holders very much like the quicksets from Cabela's, if you can't find them in a store around here.

Cabela's Quickdraw rod holders might be an option.
