New Guy (with story)
Okay, okay, okay. I have been a lurker for some time and feel that I should finaly join in the fun. As you can tell by my name, I like fishing with plugs, but I do most of it up in Alaska. Here in Oregon I'm a steelhead chaser, a fly flicker, a jig tosser, bobber watcher, and sometimes spinner/spoon swinger.
My story is about one of my early steelhead trips on the North Santiam. We were drift fishing in late March, looking for some summer fish. We hadn't hooked any steelhead and lunch was coming quick. As we were drifting between holes my friend told me to go ahead and cast out as we drifted.
After breaking off I asked him what color of corky he had on the rod I was using. He said it didn't matter so I grabbed a blue. My friend said, "Whatever you do, don't use blue."
I put the blue one on.
Next cast . . . tug . . . tug. "It feels like another trout," I said. Right as I said that the line cut a quick "C" through the water. "Nope. Bigger fish!" I yelled.
After a nice fight complete with the usual jumping, and the thrashing, and the "Whoa! Don't run over there," my buddy netted the 14 pound chrome hen.
After the dust had settled and we were anchored up in the next hole, I said to my buddy, "Now who was it that told me not to use blue?"
He didn't answer my question, but instead told me, "I was just about to tell you to cast to the other side." From that day on we always joke about using, or not using blue corkies and casting to the other side of the boat. Good times!
I haven't done that float with him since that day, but he tells me that he has caught a few more fish from that same little cut in the bank.
