Default Shrimping at Port Townsend

We are going up in May to Port Townsend to Shrimp. We have never gone shrimping up there. Heard last year that they were catching big shrimp in Port Townsend. Was wondering if anyone knows where to go.

One thing you could do is launch on opening day and put your pots where everyone else puts theirs.

I'm laughing right now. I'll try to be a bit more helpful than Barnettm. You would be better off driving south into Hood Canal and shrimping there. Anywhere from Quilcene south to Hoodsport. Just look for others and hop in.

If you want to shrimp at Townsend, look at the banks like Eastern, Partridge, Hein, etc.. The straits are big water with big tides. You need heavily weighted pots and don't be surprised if the buoys go under until slack tide comes around. That is big boy shrimping and not for the casual shrimper. Not having a puller and not wanting my buoys to go under, I usually only get one set around the slack and then I'm done till the next slack.

My suggestion was serious for someone who knows absolutely nothing about the area. I was not talking about dropping right on top of someone, just in the general area.

I've spent a lot of my life in PT, but don't recall shrimping there...
Quilcene to Hoodsport is the best bet.

Bill,

I've never been there but I have heard one several occasions that Dallas bank (around the corner from PT) is decent shrimping.

I have been down around Hoodsport to shrimp did alright went up Halibut fishing at Seque heard people talking about shrimping at port townsend filling gallon bags to the top with there 80 shrimp. Hoodsport was Ok but you are only able to shrimp Wed & Sat also heard Port Townsend you can shrimp 24/7 makes lots better sense to go some place where you can shrimp three days compared to one day for 4 hours. Also thanks for letting me know how strong the current is, I will put more weights in my pots and bigger bouy's on. If any one has any more idea's sure appreciate them. first time going some place without any information isn't a good idea so if you could tell me what type of bait to use up there.

I might be able to help you some.

First look for steep walls from 200' to 300'. You want to set your gear up and down the hill till you target the depth they are in. Then set all at that range. I can see them with my sonar so I'm a bit ahead of the curve on finding them.

Bait can be dry catfood with some fish oil or such. McKay's Shrimp and Crab Gear in Brinnen has shrimp bait and oil.

Current can be strong in places. Watch your gear. And weight and buoy to match. Don't set your gear in the shipping channels. Stay out of the closed area around Preception Island and Discovery Bay.

I usually find a 2 hour soak yields well.

Have fun!

Slacker,

Frankly your best bet is to go buy John's book:

New Updated "Saltwater Fishing Journal" has arrived!!

He has actual maps showing where to shrimp in the Straits, but as it has already been pointed out, all the banks have shrimp on them. Google the book or John's Sporting Goods, buy the book, and go.

Good luck.

Before you take this advice know that in the 4yrs I have been shrimping in the straits I have seen a total of 4 other pots. this is extremely hard core fishing. Be prepared to pull 450-600ft of line and pots weighted with 30lbs of weight. Good luck.

John is right, very deep and you want a winch! I have the traps and line to get them. Your more than welcome to borrow them. My brother lives in PT and he has never talked about shrimp but how knows for sure. Keep us posted.

I have 400 ft of rope plus 2 bouy's 1 flag bouy and plan on putting more weight in my pots just have enough to shrimp hoodsport area now but i am planning on putting more rope and more weight do you really thing I need 600 ft if so I will put extra line on. Thanks for the invite on extra pots but I think the law is 4 pots per boat I am hoping by going up there that I will be able to get a lot more shrimp for the trip instead of 1 limit of shrimp per person in hoodsport. Don't make sense the way they do things traveling that far and just and hour 1/2 - 2 hours more I can be up at Port Townsend shrimping 3 days in lieu of 1 day plus I heard last year the shrimp are twice as big then hoodsports
Jerry
ps I forgot I have winch

Using 2 buoys like what they use in Hoodsport won't cut it.
John and I use A3 Poly Form buoys and a big bullet shaped one for a tag.
the current up there can be strong. We fish from 250' to 350' you need the rest of the extra line for scope.
