Default Jig fishing reel Question

Why is it that a spinning reel is prefered for fishing jigs?

I know it's hard to cast stuff with no weight with my baitcaster but the new reels cast so easy I don't think it would be that big of a problem.
But what do I know. Just a thought.

Who said a spinner is preferred? Depends on who you're listening to. Try both, then make up your own mind. They both have their place in the arsenal or go with wootersen, fish with what you're comfortable with......

Geoff,

I mostly use 1/8 oz jigs and it is easier to cast with a spinning outfit. As you know your increasing your drift using a float and when your fishing moving water with a jig your going to want a natural drift(float)it's easy to do this by leaving your bail open. I noticed there was to much pull (unnatural) on the float when I used bait casters.

Then again if your fishing still water all I said goes out the door except for the easier casting.

Have you ever jig fished with a spinning outfit before?

I dont think casting light gear with the casting reel is the problem. Like Bobby said the line usually wont roll off of the spool smooth enough to get a drag free drift and I feel presentation is about 90% of the game in float fishing. Also have you ever tried to cast under some low hanging branches with light gear and a casting reel? I am not the best out there but my cast is usually in the tree or not where I wanted it. I switched to a shimano symetry(sp) and a 9 1/2 foot rod and wont try the casting thing again. btw I use a curado and still dont feel the line comes off smooth enough to float fish with light gear. just my.02

Because you can open the bail and free spool line extending your drift downstream as far as you feel comfortable with.

It all depends on your angle of attack. From shore I like the spinning outfit. However, from the boat I tend to favor my 11'4" casting setup so that the 20# fireline can be adjusted as needed. The main thing is to present the jig(lure of choice) naturally within a foot of the bottom, logs, or boulder gardens where the steelhead are holding. Good fishing!
