What is your favorite spoon rod?
So what is your favorite spoon rod? There has been a little talk of spoons lately, so what do you consider as the best all around spoon rod? Do you like a longer rod? Do you like a shorter rod? Do you like a fast or slow rod? What works best for you?

Re: What is your favorite spoon rod?
A dozen Pixees huh Ross. Aren't they just the most wonderful spoons to behold? I tried mounting one on my wifes wedding ring instead of a diamond but for some reason she would have no part of it.
I am sure if pixees existed through history they would have been found in King Tuts tomb, many a burried treasure would have been filled with Pixees instead of gold and above all the Alaskan gold rush would have not existed because everyone would be trading pixees and salmon fishing instead of mining for gold.
Just my little take on how pixees could have re-written history.
Now that that spell is over. What do people like for their spoon rods?

Re: What is your favorite spoon rod?
I prefer an 8.5 ft. medium-heavy rod. I used to have a 1310 Lamiglas that was perfect for fishing spoons. Dont go too light, spoons are hard to cast accurately w/ an underpowered rod.

I use a 9' Loomis, 6-10lb. test with a Calais...perfect setup and you get a great pound-for-pound fight out of any steelie!!

Re: What is your favorite spoon rod?
Ross - in some areas it is just plain wacky the number of fish that will hit them. In those circumstances I always try and hook a fish on the first cast and then after a while it gets to the point to see how many casts you can go without catching a fish.
A great trick is to tie a little flashabou on the hook for a little more flash. Also a good chenille wrapped hook is great to hold a little scent.
When silvers are in Chartreuse mode a Chart. bladed spoon with a green insert (you have to take the insert from a chrome blade/green insert one and swap out the chrart. blade/chart. insert) these can be deadly. Throw in a green flash hook....LOOK OUT!
The pink blade/pink insert in 1/2 oz. is killer on pinks. Throw in a flash tail or a hoochie tail, again.....LOOK OUT!
Looks like everyone is on the same page as far as a good spoon rod. A medium 8-8 1/2' casting rod is what I have been using.

Re: What is your favorite spoon rod?
Willow Drifter, Thanks for the tips
I see they have some new ones that have rattles. Are they better than the original ones ?

Re: What is your favorite spoon rod?
Ross - I have used the green/white bladed one with the orange insert in size 7/8 oz. for chums. I didn't really notice any difference. I didn't notice a change great enough to warrent the increased price. I of course still have a bunch but I don't find myself fishing with them as much as the non-rattle ones.

Re: What is your favorite spoon rod?
I use a Lamiglas G1307. Casts very well, very accurate, and handles the fish just fine. Sensitive enough for those subtle spoon takes. Love that "tap" , fish on.

Re: What is your favorite spoon rod?
I like to use the longer rods. My spoon rod is the lamiglass Bill Herzog model 10' 8-17lb. One of the reason I chose this rod is because it doubles as a pretty good drift and bobber rod if I only want to carry one rod. I'm a bank maggot for steelies and often find myself carrying 3 rods.

Re: What is your favorite spoon rod?
Cold Steel-
How do you like your Herzog Special? I was looking at that rod the other day after thinking that my current float rod (10' Cabela's Fishe Eagle II) was a little soft. When it comes to steelies I'm a flaot fishing junky, but wouldn't mind having another rod so I can have a long rod for spoons and another, longer rod for floats.

10.5' Shimano Convergence with a Curado. Doubles as my float rod.

Re: What is your favorite spoon rod?
M'kay - Although its not my primary float rod and I haven't caught a fish with it yet using floats it seems to work good. I've only had it for about 4 weeks, got a great deal from lamiglass on a demo. One nice thing is that it can cast light and heavy floats pretty good. I normally use a loomis 1082s for fishing small floats and a lami 1312 for larger floats when salmon fishing or on bigger water.
