Default Springers above I-5

I understand that today it opens above I-5? Question is.. Is it worth going this weekend out of Chinook Landing; are the fish that high in the river in volume? I have only been Springer fishing once, and that is where I launched. We anchored just above 205 bridge, but I don't remember when in the year we went. SO.. Would it be a fishy day anchored above 205? Or do I hit the steelhead hear locally!!

SS... the fishing will be great, the weather looks to be awesome, the catching may be less than spectacular, though

I would say hold off unless you just need an excuse to fish. You would probably have better luck fishing down between Kelley Point and St. Helens.

Based on dam counts and netting results I would guess there are between 20-200 fish a day pushing through this section. That is not to say they can't be caught, only that the odds aren't good.

I just got off the phone with a buddy that hit the bank at zero dark thirty below but near Bonneville somewhere. He only saw one caught, and that it was a zoo times two.

Not to discourage you, but that's the report.

Updated:

As of 12:30 PM, only 2 caught. There's more than a zoo times two now!

I wouldn't waste your time today driving to Bonneville.

I was going to go but decided to save the gas. Last year at this time when I hit it fishing was off and on all day and there were hundreds going over, the total count was almost 3500. As of right now unless the counts some how got messed up only 87.
Not to encouraging as far as I'm concerned. Just a matter of time though.

The bonneville counts clearly aren't posted yet, or otherwise steelhead are flying upriver somehow. I'd be kinda surprised if we don't have a couple hundred a day going over by this weekend.

Running down HWY 14 earlier there were probably 20+ boats between Chinook landing and the down river end of Gov't island.

I went up to bonniville saturday afternoon to see if anything was coming up through the ladders. Was there for 30min or longer and saw nothing but fast moving water :depressed: . I am planning to hit gov. isl this sunday anyway. Will let you know how the catching was.

Bonneville counts still total under 100 for the season. Last year by this time, there were thousands. Some will be caught, but not in any significant numbers yet.

We also have the gillnetters to contend with right now.

Give them a week or two, or hit the lower Columbia or lower Willamette.
