Default Smelt Dipping Cowlitz - Real Poor! Tuesday

Only a few dipper's on the river and with yesterday's struggle that is probably the reason.

Went up to the area below Carnival Market at 6:30AM and even though I don't speak Russian I figured out that the one & only dipper didn't get any yet.

Went to Carnival Market and the one & only dipper that was camped there in a camper couldn't find any there or any where else last night which came as no surprise to me.

No bird or sea lion activity from the Longview-Kelso bridges to Carnival Market.

Ran into a granfather and grandson from Auburn above the bridges and talked them into Gearhart and they followed me.
A little bird activity there but not looking to optomistic but suggested that there were some there yesterday morning about 8:00AM and if it was tide related maybe some would show up in a little while.
They will call me if they find some.

Went down to the Port Docks and didn't see any good signs in the Columbia.

We have poor water conditions in the Cowlitz.
Cold, low & clear.

There is smelt in the Columbia but they might spawn in the mainstem Columbia or headed for the Sandy, Cowlitz or elsewhere.

I'll start another thread on what I found out from talking to a biologist about 5:00PM yesterday.

If I hear of any entering the Cow later today I will post.

Dano,
Thanks for all the reports and putting in the time to keep us all current on the activities up there. I wasn't able to get in on all the fun last week but really enjoyed your reports and advise. You are what this board is all about, thanks.

Anyone with an open seat should give Dan first crack at it.

He has stepped up to the plate, and hit a homerun with his smelt reports.

This is above and beyond the call of ifish duty!

Happened past the river earlier on erron and haven't seen or heard any changes.
Bummer!

Unless we get some serious rain in a big hurry, I don't expect any radical changes either.
But I am fairly new at this.

I had a little more luck than you guys. First dip was a winner. Of course, it was at the Whole Foods counter @ 2.99/lb.....

Dead, dead, dead and deader! :depressed:

From a different thread:

Quote:
Is it worth the drive from PDX to go smelting in the Cowlitz??
<font size="2" face="verdana,arial,helvetica">No! Not at this time.

Went back down to Gearhart Gardens and tried to rescue the grandpa and grandson from Auburn and a few went through earlier as they see the gull's dive on some and get a few.
Must have been a vry small number of smelt that came in.
Drove up the river and looked from Chalie's restuarant to Carnival Market.
A lot of dipper's but not a single person has seen a single smelt dipped today.
They left for Auburn empty handed except they learned a lot more about smelt, dipping and places to try in the future.

Very few gull's and they probably headed for the garbage dump.
A few sea lions but they were just out there barking and whining.

Well, I'm in all probability done with the reports for awhile as I have to take care of business which includes a coastal trip.
If I get a call from a reliable source even when I am at the coast I will post it if there are no current reports.

I'm not to optomistic for the Cow as the season is winding down (scheduled to end March 31rst) but you never know.
Keep your eyes on the Sandy River.

Cowlitz River Smelt Season Could End Soon

Thanks to all the ifisher's that commented or complimented my reports on my threads and other threads.
Sorry to those that couldn't hit it right but the smelt were just too unpredictable this year.
A very unusual season this year but it isn't the first time.

I have to ask that you not call my cell# at this time for reports because I will not be monitoring the Cow and last week I ate up several hundred minutes mostly ifisher's looking for current reports.
Unless you call after 9:00PM or on the weekend, then fill free to call.
I have till the 27th before I get more minutes.
That's OK, I'll just have to skimp a bit the rest of the month.
I had a couple calls this morning including one from Westport, Wa and apologize for being short.

Hopefully someone else will be reporting on ifish and there are those local sporting goods stores to call and one of them is on top of the current conditions most of the time.

Beautifull day in down town Longview!
