Jet Pumps
Has anyone changed the main bearing in a jet pump? Is it tricky? Any words of wisdom? I looked it up in the shop manuel, looks fairly straight forward.

Re: Jet Pumps
What kind of pump? I have a Berkeley that I just rebuilt. Piece of cake but you have to take it all apart to get to the bearing. Time consuming but a great winter project .

Re: Jet Pumps
It's an outboard jet on a 225 Yamaha, looks fairly simple in the shop manuel.

Re: Jet Pumps
It looks simple enough! But very certain you are capable of doing the work. Thes jet drives can be very stubborn when it come to disasembling them. The bearing carrier has a tendency to hang up on the pump housing. If to much force is applied bad things can happen to cast aluminum. Also the seals and shims have to be placed in the right order or you will not get enough water to your motor. Then there is the water pump assemply, the nylon housing likes to wedge its self onto the housing. If you have mechanical experiance you will fight a few things. If you have mininamal mechanical experiance, you will fight the entire overhaul.

P.S.
Also, if your bearing is whiped out, make sure your drive shaft hasn't been groved by the gunk. Its very important that the new seals have a smooth surface to ride on. Its also a good idea to check the "run out" on your drive shaft, a slightly bent shaft can eat bearings too. Good luck on the overhaul. If you have any question feel free to email me.

Re: Jet Pumps
Not an answer to your question, but I was advised by the dealer to grease mine regularly to dramatically extend the time before the first replacement was necessary. He said most owners don't bother, even after an audible squeal began. Hopefully I won't be in your shoes for a few more years through a little preventive maintenance. Good luck with the replacement work, freespool. I'm sure that most of us jet owners would appreciate knowing the results of your home garage repair job.

Re: Jet Pumps
Thanks for the help guys. I've talked myself out of changing the bearing. I'm going to replace the sleeve and shim the empeller and see what happens.
