Default Herring in Newport?

Are there any herring in at Newport? I need to get the little kiddies out to catch something before school starts. I've never fished for herring in Newport so would love for some input on where to hunt for the little guys.

Greg,

Pilar, Keta and I fished the bay about 4 weeks ago. We'd start a drift just off the CG on the incoming tide.

We did well. Some shad and cod were in the mix with the herring.

Good luck!

I love kippered herring. Anyone know a recipe for kippered or smoked herring?

The latest report I have indicates lots of nice, large herring moving in and out of Yaquina Bay with the tide, available by boat from the bridge to the Embarcadero but not from the docks.

There are large herring available, with a few smaller ones mixed in. They are mostly available on an incoming tide and at the high ebb.

Work around the Coast Guard Station and stay in the current up to about the Embarcadero Resort along the sea wall.

Last Sunday we put up 8 dozen in about 1/2 hour. I had to stop because my lil' bait cooler was full.

Good luck. SD

You can also jig for them off of the pier near the South Bay Marina. If you see small splashes in the water, that's the herring near the top. Early morning can be good for them off of the pier. You don't need anything fancy. Just 6-10 hooks with a little yarn tied to them, with the weight below the hooks. Cast out, and jig the setup back. If you get one on, leave it out there awhile, and it will attract more. Then you can reel in several at one time. I've caught them on just small red bare steelhead hooks before. It's pretty fun. They're good smoked.
