Names of boats!
When you named your boats why did you name it that name, or was it already named. My boat I have now was already named by a retired Fireman ( Happy Ours) before I owned it, but I like the name. My old boat was The Little Screamer cause it screamed........

Re: Names of boats!
Salmonator was an e-mail name I used 6 or 7 years ago. It clicked while I was reading F&H news  and watching terminator2 simultaneously. Named the new thunderjet "Salmonator". Now that I have the trophy, and knowing that it would be bad luck to give two boats the same name it was dubbed Salmonator Too as in "also". So now I can just call it the salmonator without any bad mojo. So far so good...

Re: Names of boats!
I am buying a boat called, "Rarin' To Go" but I want to change the name. The name is painted on, so it will probably be a while before I figure out where to take it to get it repainted with the name I want.
I have a couple:
1. Cindy Rae (My wife--sappy I know)
2. Sea Mos (take on computer term CMOS)
3. Sea ++ (Another computer term)
I am leaning toward Cindy Rae (since she let my buy the boat).
Anyway....
Those are my thoughts.

Re: Names of boats!
When I was still a Floridiot in Miami, I had a flats boat that I called the "Spoon-Bill". This was a combination of my favorite snook/redfish lure (Johnson's Gold Spoon) and my name, and was also my favorite wading bird that is found in the Everglades and the keys (Roseatte Spoonbill, looks kind of like a short, stubby flamingo with a big flat spoon for a beak).
It seems here that many people use the same name for their IFish handle, and their boatname. Kind of a dilemma for me bacause I plan on buying a boat soon and I don't want to call it "The Otolith".

Chacal, it wouldn't happen to be a Sea-Ray would it? If so C-Rae might be a happy medium?

Re: Names of boats!
My boat isn't named (just don't want to name it) but I saw a cool name on one last weekend - I saw it a few years ago too. It's the "Aquaholic"
My friend is in a Yacht club and his boat has "f**k Yeah!" on the back which cracked me up, but not a good boat to take out around kids.

Chacal,
My best advice would be to pick choice #1. Cindy Rae, It is the only name I would consider if I were you. It could work wonders for you.

Re: Names of boats!
I always loved that little Disney character, the bunny with an attitude. So I named my baseball mitt Thumper, then my parakeet, then my boat, etc. They all survive, except the parakeet, who was Thumped by a local cat named Phred, who is now Phred The Phormer, etc.

Re: Names of boats!
Our boat was already named "Second Effort", so we never had chance to name it we just left it. But we have thought about changing, but can't seem to find a name that's fitting, and we have gotten kinda used to the name. I wonder what the guy whose boat this was, named his next boat. He traded this one in after only having 6 months or so and another one custom built that was twice as big! Maybe "Third Times a Charm"! It's not easy finding the right name.

I found this article and thought some of you might like to know what it has to offer.
If you want to name your boat or rename it this is how to apease the gods and insure you do not incure their wrath...
Vigor's Interdenominational Boat Denaming Ceremony by John Vigor
Due to an overwhelming number of requests for copies of John Vigor's Interdenominational Boat Denaming Ceremony, we are rerunning it again. Now, take care to save this one! I once knew a man in Florida who told me he'd owned 24 different yachts and renamed every single one of them. "Did it bring you bad luck?" I asked. "Not that I'm aware of," he said. "You don't believe in those old superstitions, do you?" Well, yes. Matter of fact, I do. And I'm not alone. Actually, it's not so much being superstitious as being v-e-r-y careful. It's an essential part of good seamanship. Some years ago, when I wanted to change the name of my newly purchased 31-foot sloop from Our Way to Freelance, I searched for a formal "denaming ceremony" to wipe the slate clean in preparation for the renaming. I read all the books, but I couldn't find one. What I did learn, though, was that such a ceremony should consist of five parts: an invocation, an expression of gratitude, a supplication, a re-dedication and a libation. So I wrote my own short ceremony. Vigor's inter-denominational denaming ceremony. It worked perfectly. Freelance carried me and my family many thousands of deep-sea miles both north and south of the equator, and we enjoyed good luck all the way. I used the same ceremony recently to change the name of my newly acquired Santana 22 from Zephyr to Tagati, a Zulu word that means "magic," or "bewitched." We're hoping she'll sail like a witch when I finally get her in the water this summer after an extensive refit. I'll give you the exact wording of Vigor's denaming ceremony, but first you must remove all physical traces of the boat's old name. Take the old log book ashore, along with any other papers that bear the old name. Check for offending books and charts with the name inscribed. Be ruthless. Sand away the old name from the lifebuoys, transom, top-side, dinghy, and oars. Yes, sand it away. Painting over is not good enough. You're dealing with gods here, you understand, not mere dumb mortals. If the old name is carved or etched, try to remove it or, at the very minimum, fill it with putty and then paint over. And don't place the new name anywhere on the boat before the denaming ceremony is carried out. That's just tempting fate. How you conduct the ceremony depends entirely on you. If you're the theatrical type, and enjoy appearing in public in your yacht club blazer and skipper's cap, you can read it with flair on the foredeck before a gathering of distinguished guests. But if you find this whole business faintly silly and embarrassing, and only go along with it because you're scared to death of what might happen if you don't, you can skulk down below and mumble it on your own. That's perfectly okay. The main thing is that you carry it out. The words must be spoken. I compromised by sitting in Tagati's cockpit with the written-out ceremony folded into a newspaper, so that any passerby would think I was just reading the news to my wife, sitting opposite. Enough people think I'm nuts already. Even my wife has doubts. The last part of the ceremony, the libation, must be performed at the bow, just as it is in a naming ceremony. There are two things to watch out for here. Don't use cheap-cheap champagne, and don't try to keep any for yourself. Buy a second bottle if you want some. Use a brew that's reasonably expensive, based on your ability to pay, and pour the whole lot on the boat. One of the things the gods of the sea despise most is meanness, so don't try to do this bit on the cheap. What sort of time period should elapse between this denaming ceremony and a new naming ceremony? There's no fixed time. You can do the renaming right after the denaming, if you want, but I personally would prefer to wait at least 24 hours to give any lingering demons a chance to clear out. (Scroll down for the wording of the ceremony.) Afterwards Now you can pop the cork, shake the bottle and spray the whole of the contents on the bow. When that's done, you can quietly go below and enjoy the other bottle yourself. Incidentally, I had word from a friend last month that the Florida yachtsman I mentioned earlier had lost his latest boat, a 22-foot trailer-sailer. Sailed her into an overhead power line. Fried her. She burned to the waterline. Bad luck? Not exactly. He and his crew escaped unhurt. He was just very careless. He renamed her, as usual, without bothering to perform Vigor's famous interdenominational denaming ceremony. And this time, at long last, he got what he deserved.
Vigor's Denaming Ceremony
"In the name of all who have sailed aboard this ship in the past, and in the name of all who may sail aboard her in the future, we invoke the ancient gods of the wind and the sea to favor us with their blessing today."Mighty Neptune, king of all that moves in or on the waves; and mighty Aeolus (pronounced EE-oh-lus), guardian of the winds and all that blows before them:"We offer you our thanks for the protection you have afforded this vessel in the past. We voice our gratitude that she has always found shelter from tempest and storm and enjoyed safe passage to port."Now, wherefore, we submit this supplication, that the name whereby this vessel has hitherto been known (_____), be struck and removed from your records."Further, we ask that when she is again presented for blessing with another name, she shall be recognized and shall be accorded once again the selfsame privileges she previously enjoyed."In return for which, we rededicate this vessel to your domain in full knowledge that she shall be subject as always to the immutable laws of the gods of the wind and the sea."In consequence whereof, and in good faith, we seal this pact with a libation offered according to the hallowed ritual of the sea."
Christening Ceremony
After a boat is denamed, you simply need to rename it using the traditional christening ceremony, preferably with Queen Elizabeth breaking a bottle of champagne on the bow, and saying the words: "I name this ship ___________ and may she bring fair winds and good fortune to all who sail on her."
Is there a reason I am researching this.... Maybe

Thanks UglyGreen/Mr. Fisherman!
A good friend is considering renaming his Grand Banks.
My friends began calling my little boat Fishguts because it always had a bunch on it. So did I and now they just call me GutZ.
Another friend has a boat here in town. We call Ballard 'Ho.

Your boat isn't a blue & white Fiberform is it? When I saw the topic, I thought about my wonderful Fiberform that I named years ago,
"Happy Ours". What a cool coincidence. Sold it Years ago. Thanks-Do

Re: Names of boats!
So my dad, brother and I went out and bought an old Starcraft that was unnamed. On Saturday morning, my brother and I decided to take her for a spin. We left the house just before 7am.
As we were pulling out of the neighborhood I looked over and this gal is passed out in the ivy embankment. At first we thought she was toast (dead), but I felt for a pulse and hollered at her. Booze was in the air. This chick was tossed salad - take your brain out and play with it caliber drunk. It was about a 20 foot moderate grade slope. You could see the impressions in the ivy where she rolled on down the hill. We offered to call 911 or a cab, but she chased us off swearing and cussing, slurring and puking.
Near as we could tell, there was a heck of a party at the house directly above and she must 'just vanished' from the party. "Has anyone seen Tammy lately? She must have found a date."
Her noggin must have hurt for days.
The boat's name is now The Ivy Girl.

Speaking of renaming boats...did any one else see the Jetcraft sled at Buoy 10 last week that had 1 foot flourescent letters painted on the side renaming the boat "JETCRAFT SUCKS".
I thought that was pretty original and definately visable.

Re: Names of boats!
It's not Jetcraft that sucks, it's Harbercraft/Eagle from Canada who bought Jetcraft and then gutted them. Scumballs.
I don't think their company is any too healthy either, and I shall watch them sink beneath the waves with a great deal of pleasure. I'll even pour a glass of my finest and toast their passing.
If I had the capital I would buy the name back from them and put the Jetcraft guys back to building boats. They were good and took a lot of pride in their work.

Yes - Yes and Yes - LMAO (had to get the rib wraps out again). Loved the way he matched the "SUCKS" with the original big red lettering.
I was trying to be PC but now that the subject has been broached..... yeeeehhaaaa.
That guy has had a bad experiance !! Oh - been there done that, just not that brand.
Hope he has better days ( I gave him a yell up at B29 and said I loved his boat name, didn't seem all that surprised). Oh boy glad it wasn't me this time.

We were standing on the show room floor when my 10 year old daughter announced that I was more spoiled than her because I was getting a new boat.
It stuck and it instantly became the "Spoiled Daddy".

Re: Names of boats!
I named her Tacklebuster because of my style of fishing. I like light tackle when chasing my favorite fish (sturgeon). Most people that would see me on the river would say "you gotta use bigger gear cause the gators will bust your stuff." I would just laugh and out fish them three to one After living in Alaska for 5 years, the same fishing starting getting a little old. I sold most of my heavy stuff and started landing 30 to 40 pound chinook on stuff people were catching bass with in the lower 48. Gotta love the biguns on the smaller stuff. Over years of doing this I have proven time and time again it will outfish the "normal" gear on any given day. See ya on the river....
