Default starter question

The "bendix" doesn't always pop up to engage the flywheel. It sometimes just sits there and spins when trying to start the motor. I found that if I pop it up with a screwdriver, then try to start, it works ok. So it seems to be getting stuck in the down position but when I free it up, then it works for quite awhile. This has happened maybe 4 times in over 50 motor starts. Is this easy to fix/replace?
Thanx for any replies.
Bob

Get some dry graphite and lube the shaft/bendix with it. I used to work as a mechanic and we always kept a little squeeze bottle around for just that. Even on new installs we would use it. Greese or any other wet lube picks up particles/dirt, graphite won't. It's actually good for a lot of items liek that, but it's messy (black) so don't use it on anything you don't want to turn black.
Oh ya - If that deosn't work replace it and personally I would replace the entire starter along with the bendix. Once I get it out- all new back in.

i'd bite the bullet and replace it. if you don't you'll probably end up stuck somewhere (and probably at the worst possible time).
