Default Hunting in the fog????

When you fellow waterfowlers are hunting in dense fog 150' visiablity or less do you call to let the bird's know your there or do you sit silent?????
I hunted this morning and tried both ways just trying to get a concensus on what guy's do and what works. Thanks Scott

depends on where you are at, and the time of the hunting season.

If it is early on, blast away and call like crazy.

If it is now
Remain mostly silent.

maybe buck out a chuckle here and there.

In heavy fog you have two choices:

1. Wait until it clears, at which time it MIGHT get good.
2. Pick up and catch that football game that had you teetering on whether to go hunting or not.

Me and a buddy hunted in thick fog this morning and had ducks landing in our decoys almost before we saw them. But the fog was in a thin layer on the ground. I think they could see down into it fine just not far horizontally. No or little calling was best in the fog as they were close already. After it cleared no calling and removed the knotty duck and we had pintails coming right in. Great hunt today. Got my first double on drake pintails!!

I like to throw out random calls ever 15 mins or so if its real thick. Not a long drawn out hail call at the top of my lungs, maybe a quack a few chuckles and a soft greeting call. Seems to work pretty well for me.

We were also hunting this morning and the birds were not responding to calls much at all but when i would put my foot out of the blind and splash it around in the water the came diving in.

Call VERY soft, use a whistle. not too loud. Splash water with your foot is also good.

Depends. If you are on the X, you can just let em come. If not, I will usually do some blind calling.

We had birds this morning in heavy fog come right in, but any calling beyond a chuckle or whistle sent them in the opposite direction. The birds we did see that didn't show interest could not be convinced by calls, spinner or jerk cord.

Yep, in heavy fog! They can see alot better in it than we can, We've had GREAT success using ours, you have to use it blind of course. Jerk cord in the water with a couple dekes attached works wonders too.

Our best hunt EVER was out in Coos Bay in a super heavy fog. Fog ceiling was 15' over our heads and we were calling like crazy. The dekes were still on the mud flats as the tide had'nt come up yet. The ducks were DIVE BOMBING us right out of the fog. Had two limits in less than half an hour.

Hunting ducks in the fog over water and hunting geese in the fog over dry land are two very different games...

Ducks over water in the fog I've had very little issue. Ducks seemed to come as normal OR the flight was a little later in the a.m. Geese in the fog is my nemissis. Had more days than I care to count messed up by fog. I'm cursed on goose hunts in the fog....

Cheers,

Adam
