I did a test on the Nestucca a few years ago. I saved (froze) my duck guts and pieces after each duck hunt. Then I put cockles in to pots, bass carc in two pots and stinky duck parts in two pots. I rotated the pots around as I was checking them, and the wild duck parts produced waayy better. Thank God I don't duck hunt any more! Man, that stunk!

Razor guts work the best IMO. That all fresh/frozen bait mentioned works too.

All that works, but the seals won't bother the chicken. Any fish that I've used, if there are seals in the area they will destroy traps to get at it. Some people use mink carcasses, but a more nasty bait you will never find.

If you were at a buffet would you go to cavier or chicken

1 - Tuna heads

2 - Shad

3 - Salmon carks (but creates problems with seals tearing into the pots)

4 - Clam guts/clams

5 - Chicken

I have used some frozen pellet head trout, that the kids did not eat, several times. It seems to produce really really well. Even off the dock I was getting 2x the amount of crab everyone else was. They were using bottom fish and turkey/chicken.

I also have found great success with salmon heads. For the most part though it seems to be more about finding where the crab are then which bait you use...,.

I always take some Crab Feast along and give a little squirt before dropping each time, if anything i think it helps with the initial attracting of the crab.

1. Tuna Carcasses/Heads...last a long time and much better than all other bulk baits.
1. Shad.
2. Razor Clams & Cockle guts & shells...Even better than tuna but hard to use just clams for bait so I mix a bit in with all my pots.
3. Salmon Carcasses/Heads but the seals love them. Never had any problems in the bay but from the piers have had the traps robbed & rings taken.
4. Mink
5. Turkey Legs or any old freezer burned meat
42. Chicken
75. Cat food in a can.

The best result for me, and I did comparisons with other people and baits, salmon carcass, followed by other fish carcasses and then chicken parts.

For me:

1. clams
2. tuna
3. chicken/turkey necks and backs
4. salmon/bottom fish carks.

The last crabbing we did this year, my 6 pot string with large pieces of turkey and chicken (two pots with half chickens) produced 36 keepers in the same amount of time that the guy next to me got 24 keepers using mink. We culled our two limits he kept everything. Same amount of time, no other pots around. I thought that was a pretty even test. That told me poultry would pull 1 1/2 crabs to every crab mink brought in. The two pots with half chickens brought in more crab than the pots with a single turkey back or a few necks. That was out of the same string, so that told me more bait was better than less. No surprise there.

I prefer Chicken/Turkey due to the seal problem, but frozen beef liver has been a favorite if i can get my hands on it. Leaves a nice scent trail and the crabs seem to enjoy the variety.

After a big storm when all the floating timber drags a pile of commercial traps ashore, take a look inside. Most of the time you'll find razor clam pieces. Ya wanna guess why?

Personally I use salmon heads and cacks most of the time. Shad when I have them.

For real though...in my limited tries, fish parts seemed to out catch chicken parts. Pretty sure those lil buggers will eat anything.

LOL, someone mentioned mink. Once I thought that I would try the litter buggers because I had heard a lot about them, so got one in Tillamook and put it in the bait box. Wify always crabs with me you must understand. She loves crabbing and fishing.

So we were in Netarts one gorgeous fall day and she opens the bait box up front and discovers the little critter and has a fit. "That is the most disgusting thing I ever saw! I am NOT eating any crab that ate THAT!" It never made it to any crab pot and thus I have no personal idea if mink attract crab. I do know that they repel most humans tho.

On a more practical note, I started keeping the juice and guts and empty shells of the crabs we cooked. I mix bread, cooked rice, and some corn oil in with it, mash it into a pulp, then freeze it in individual small baggies. It is a great attractant and bait as it slowly thaws in your trap and sends scent and bits of itself drifting away. The corn oil prevents scent disbursal too soon. Use your imagination and add food scraps and so on to this concoction. Crab bait is NOT cheap and this is one way I can stretch it.

But if money is no problem, lol, then its back to my original post - SHAD. take care, tee

I marinate scored chicken legs or quarters in clam juice, then freeze them in portioned ziplocs, so they're ready to go... one bag covers three bait boxes. I use traps, so in addition to the chicken, I have those cylinder hard plastic bait tubes that clip onto the trap and dangle above the bait boxes. In those, I place a sponge that's been soaked in Crab Feast or Smelly Jelly. This set-up consistently outperforms those that are around me, whether on the dock or out in the bay. Have never had a problem with seals. When I'm home, I wring out the sponges, plop them in a ziploc and stick them in the freezer until the next trip.

I've used mink with success, same goes for shad, turkey, and even fish carcasses from dumpster diving.
In Texas we even used chicken necks.

When brought up and sitting on the bottom of the boat, they always seem to go for 1 finger, even with the stress of being out of the water, 1 finger is hard for them to resist.
I would say 1 finger is the best bait once the crabs are out of water, a foot or toe would be a close second for the ones that fall out and crawl along the flooor.

You think our Red Rocks are mean, try grabbing one of those Blue's...they are the meanest things I have ever pulled out of a cage!

For me:

1) shad (whole/cut up); don't catch 'em myself, but occasionally will score some in trade.

2) other fish carks... usually salmon/steel (heads are the best since they last so much longer than anything else) but as mentioned before, seals will gnarl up your traps and steal them if you don't do a good enough job of armoring/clamping everything up tight. However, they'll figure out pretty quick which traps are worth their trouble and which aren't so you only have to make it secure enough to convince them to move on to the next guy's and then they'll usually leave your traps alone the rest of the time (they evidently remember well enough to tell them apart).

2b) one time I had a bunch of bass parts left over from a fish fry... didn't last as long as steelhead (makes sense, since all the pieces were smaller) but they seemed to out-fish everything else while not drawing as much attention from the seals.

3) chicken - my regular standby since it's widely available and not too expensive (can usually find some that's near the pull date for extra cheap) and the seals leave it alone. Mandatory for the casting-style traps like Crabhawks that aren't big enough for a full bait box enclosure.

4) cat food... I keep a couple cans in my crab gear bucket as a last-ditch backup if I run out of everything else. Not as good for an attractant, but the advantages are being able to store without refrig/freezing, and super durable (only having to punch a bunch of holes in the can).

1. Razor Clam guts
2. Tuna parts
3. Shad/Salmon can share spot #3
4. Turkey/chicken/ducks

All of those work really well, but a commercial style bait can milking out with razor clam guts always outproduces everything else.

find yourself a trapper friend. he will likely give you more bait than you can use.

mink, raccoon, beaver and nutria all work really well. put the bigger critters in the freezer for a while, then chop into your preferred bait size with an axe. the pre-freezing cuts down on the splatter.

bacon works really well also.

any greasy meat will work well, and being a non-fish bait means you don't have to worry about the seals.
