Re: Whats a good cure for salmon eggs?
If you're looking for a great commerical cure, you can't beat Amerman's. Check this BB for more information. Pro-cure Wizard is also popular and widely available. I like the double neon red.
If you want your own hand made cure, there are lots of good recipes. A sugar/salt/borax solution with red Pro-glow dye is a good start. The Piscatorial Pursuits BB ( www.piscatorialpursuits.com) has instructions in their Tips section on making this cure. Good luck.

Re: Whats a good cure for salmon eggs?
Thanks for pointing out that cure on Bob's board. I am in need of some cure as the last cure I purchased has clumped.

Re: Whats a good cure for salmon eggs?
I too would recommend Amerman's. It really cures the eggs nicely and they will milk really well.

Re: Whats a good cure for salmon eggs?
Ammermans is a great cure.. I use it a lot. I like their steelie cure, I mix the hot pink and hot orange together to make make a great sunrise red color. the eggs juice up real well and then dry out nicely! Great durability and texture and milk out at a good rate.
(I have had good success adding crawfish oil to my steelie eggs.)
Salmon eggs I use both Ammermans and ProCure.. about 50/50. Dont forget to throw in some sardine fillets the nookers love them! Anise oil is also a great additive.. along with shrimp oil. Mix it up, be different!
Anyone tried the salmo'powder?

Re: Whats a good cure for salmon eggs?
Fishbane, I am in Albany and I have both Amerman Salmon and Steelhead cure for sale. Let me know if you want to meet and I will get you some. In fact, if you want, bring your eggs and I will show you how we cure them. Later, Grant

Re: Whats a good cure for salmon eggs?
Sorry Fishbane, not right now. By next year we should have it in several places but we have just started talking to several outlets including GI Joes and Sportsman Warehouse and lots of smaller places. Stay tuned!

Re: Whats a good cure for salmon eggs?
Ok, question about curing eggs with scents.
At what point (time) during the curing process do you add your craw/anise/shrimp oils to the eggs?

Re: Whats a good cure for salmon eggs?
Tiderunner, I like to add my scents on the river. When I have added them during the curing process I try to add them after they are totally juiced out and are starting to reabsorb the cure and juice. About 24 hours for Amerman cure. Grant

Whats a good cure for salmon eggs?
I got my first chinook of the year yesterday.
I was due.
a nice 23# hen. She had a bunch of eggs in her. I'd like to try and cure my own eggs.
Does anyone have any suggestions for a cure to use?
Thanks

Re: Whats a good cure for salmon eggs?
I looked at the egg recipe on Bobs board and it calls for a quart of water. Would that be tap water or distilled? Thanks

Re: Whats a good cure for salmon eggs?
Steelhead Slayer, I think that you are talking about a wet or brine cure.
Personally, I think that a brine cure dilutes the smell inpact of a Salmon egg which is exactly the opposite of what makes a Salmon bite.
The more powerful a smell a Salmon gets to it's nose is a direct ratio to how aggressively a Salmon will take the bait.
I would think that you would want a cure that makes the egg suck up as much smell as possible.
Water based cures will have the egg absorbing some water instead of scent.

1 cup salt to one gallon water. Let eggs soak in refridgerator for two or three days. Drain and let set in fridg for a few hours to firm up. Serve on crackers.
