Contaminant Study
Subject: Columbia River Fish Contaminant Survey, 1996-1998.
EPA, Region 10 has completed its final report on the survey of chemical
contaminants in fish collected from the Columbia River Basin. This
survey was done in cooperation with the Columbia River Intertribal Fish
Commission (CRITFC), the Warm Springs Tribe, the Yakama Nation, the
Umatilla Confederated Tribes, and the Nez Perce Tribe. The study was
initiated because of concerns about the potential health threat to
Native Americans who consume fish from the Columbia River Basin. Two
hundred eight samples of resident and anadromous fish species were
collected at 24 sites from 1996 through 1998. The fishing sites were
located on the following rivers in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho:
Clearwater River, Snake River, mainstem Columbia River, Wind River,
Little White Salmon River, Klickitat River, Deschutes River, Looking
Glass Creek, Fifteen Mile Creek, Umatilla River, Icicle Creek,
Willamette River, and Yakima River. The results of the fish contaminant
survey showed that of the 131 chemicals analyzed 92 were detected in
fish tissue. Information about the survey and Volume 1 of the final
report is posted on the EPA Region 10 WEB site.
The appendices to the report will be posted on the WEB site during the
week of August 19, 2002. If you have any questions about the results
you can contact me or Dana Davoli.
