Buoy 10 Sunday 8/18
Buoy 10 gave up (1) 22 pound hen on (1) strike all day. And, I think we were among the fortunate few to land a fish, in the midst of hundreds of boats. We had 2 lines down by 6:45 AM just east of the Meglar Bridge on the Washington side. Low slack was at 5:04 am. Our fish came at 9:30, in the Ilwaco area, Washington side, in 35' of water, on a delta diver in front of a dark green fish flash attractor, all 5' in front of a medium size plug cut herring. I was out about 12 pulls, having had no contact with fish at 15-17. The fish hooked itself hard, and I had my friend Steve set the hook and land the fish. I did not touch the rod. You have described to me the satisfaction you derive from doing this. I felt the same way, and Steve was thrilled.
I was surprised at how slow it was. Water temp at Meglar at low slack was 69 deg. F. At Bouy 10 on the flood it was 64 deg F. Sea state and wind conditions were excellent. Not glass, but very manageable even for my boat.
We fished plug cut herring at all depths and various speeds, up stream and down. Changed baits frequently. Also fished a big jointed Rapala Sliver pulled fast and slow, deep and shallow, and a Cayote rigged various ways. We fished hard, and personally saw fewer than 10 nets up, and fewer fish. From our launch at East Basin, all the way to Buoy 10, and back. At the tide swing from high slack to ebb most of the fleet including the guides moved to the head of Young's Bay, with similar results to the morning scarcity.
Tough day, but one nice fish. Fishing for us ended at 1:15 PM. All total, we had a total of about 8 productive man hours with lines down, and one strike. The rest of the time was in transit.

Re: Buoy 10 Sunday 8/18
Launched at Chinook at 4:30am. Gotta love the pros who are putting in early. We were #12 in line and had to jog alongside to get the gear in the boat. Those guys launched so fast their trailers weren't wet.
Lines in the water abeam the Church while we still had to have the running lights on. I have described in depth the way I fish Buoy 10. No need to repeat all that here.
Had three hits but no stickers by 7:00am, then nothing until just before high slack. Overall a slow morning. Saw four fish caught. I picked this one up just below the bridge, holding position with the tide still running in.
Naturally, I left my scale sitting on the kitchen counter so all I got was the dressed weight, 42lbs even. Picked up my second, an 18lb hen, 15 minutes later. My brother caught a 35lb buck two hours after that (none of these are Tules). We had four others on that got off within the first thirty seconds and we really should have limited the boat.
I agree with NoLimit , pretty slow and mostly Tules. Might as well wait a couple of weeks or got up by Ill-Waco.

Re: Buoy 10 Sunday 8/18
Crabby, I was the one that asked you about your sticker as you were taking off from the dock... Had a great three days at wiser's. After the fiasco on saturday am, I think it was about 04:00 when I put in and waited for my friend to show at 5:30. Later in the day, someone launched their truck and boat together with only the antenna showing. Someone from f-5 has pictures to post. After the boat ramp thread, I've seen enough this weekend to last a while. About 5 days 3 for 7 in 3 days, not too good but I had fun and met some great folks. A big thanks to Wiser.

Re: Buoy 10 Sunday 8/18
My wife daughter and I had a great day out of Chinook Landing. We were in line to launch at 6 a.m. in the water at 7:20 a.m. (that time loss sucked but....) my daughter landed a 25 lb hen at 7:40 a.m., a nice big (I mean BIG) 35 lb (+) buck by 8:10 a.m. and another 30 lb (+) before 9:15 a.m. We were on the road home at 11 a.m. and left the other 3 out of our limit for some of you. (Got our 22 year old daughter re-hooked on fishing with the above) It was great!
All were caught on herring behind the green and red divers + green and red flashers at 15 pulls and 35 to 50 feet of water. Any color cobo was fine.
That was one heavy ice chest to unload at home but worth the drive from Portland at Oh dark thirty this morning!

Re: Buoy 10 Sunday 8/18
NoLimit - My apologies! I did not see that this is your first post. Must be that 2:30am wake-up. Welcome aboard.
Skeezer - In a nutshell: Diver (I use EZ-Divers, size 0), this one happened to be silver, connected to Fish Flash, this fish was caught on a large FF that started out dark green and silver but got customized, two feet of Maxima UG 40lb to a 6 bead swivel, then 6 feet of UG leader to a solid tie mooching rig, 5/0 over 6/0. Plug cut Purple Label herring, Brine 'n Brite overnight, inject with Pro Cure herring oil or Marie's. Rear hook hanging free, 24 pulls.
The trick: Keep your line running at 45 degrees into the water and your rod just loaded up. Forget the down riggers!! You can't see what your gear is doing. SLOW DOWN. People with no fish passed me all day!
Neutron - Shoulda let me know that was you! I would have come over and blabbed for a minute.

Re: Buoy 10 Sunday 8/18
I'm glad that somebody caught fish! We didn't put in at Hammond until about 9:30 am. We did miss the boat launch rush. That was the only positive.
We fished above the bridge, church hole, the Washington side and then finished on the Oregon side. We saw maybe 7 fish caught all day in a fleet of about 1000 boats. :depressed:
We did not have one take down. It was our 3rd trip of the year and the first one where we were completely skunked! Ouch!
I'm going to do something more fun this weekend that means a lot less pain, run the Hood to Coast!

Re: Buoy 10 Sunday 8/18
I am 4'11", thank you.
Does anyone have a good estimate of what this chinook weighed whole with a dressed weight of 42lbs?
By the way, here is another fishing tip: Try not to stand on your herring injector while hoisting your catch. Tends to make a mess of the side boards!

Re: Buoy 10 Sunday 8/18
Crabbait, I also saw/heard you talk to a ifish guy sunday morning at the Chinook launch dock. We were in the water at 4:30am and waited to follow someone out, I think you were right behind me (fishrite). For the weekend we had 19 takedowns, 12 hookups, and ONLY 4 in the box! I fish the same way that you do, BUT we broke 3 off on 40lb on the hook set. Just one of those days I guess. Thaks for the info.

Re: Buoy 10 Sunday 8/18
That's a nice one CB. I think I saw you land it. I was 200yds south of you when you took the picture. I thought it looked like a nice fish.
I agree that Sunday was one of the slower days. Not many fish for as many people that were out. Only saw 2 others landed towards the church after CB's and then a small slurry of just barely legal kings around 12:30. Luckly I got one as it was the only fish for us for the day. Just legal. I had to measure it 3 times before I was sure I could bonk it. Got it on a dodger and diver.

Re: Buoy 10 Sunday 8/18
Neutron;
It was a pleasure meeting you and everyone else who made it to F5 at Wisers.
I really enjoyed fishing with 4000 (that was the CG count, I heard) of you guys Saturday.
Unfortunately DesertDog reports that the pictures from the "Chinook Truck Launch" have been lost.
Wiser and I got on a few fish yesterday. A wild Coho within 5 minutes near 5, and then a 16# Chinook about 10 minutes later. We trolled until late in the day without a strike. About 1:30 I hooked another, which I lost at the boat. We wrestled one "Tule Monster" and then headed for home.
Everyone who got close to us got a fish. So if you see that Big Skull and Crossbones ...

Re: Buoy 10 Sunday 8/18
Fishhead - Oh yeah, I am gonna hang up my rod and bask in the glory of that fish..............not. See ya out there next weekend. Just think what the Tillamook big fish rivers are going to pump out this fall!
Fishguts - Was that you with the Jolly Roger flying off a sturgeon bank rod? If so, I'm the guy who asked if you were taking no prisoners. We were in the blue Alumaweld Sea Dory. Had just landed my brother's 35lber, i think.
Big river, small world.
