It's the new series...same graphite on all models. Its a composite blend. Somewhere between a GL3 and IMX in weight and feel (closer to an IMX IMHO) but more durable than an IMX. This is a sweet rod.

The new model series are SAPR-982's, not STR and yes, nice rods. These SAPR's replaced the classic HSR-982s GL'3 which are outstanding, versatile, tough rods.
Wish I needed a couple more of the SAPR's, good price. Good luck.

What is the best application for these shorter rods? Would these rods be sufficient for side drifting for winters?

I'm using it for tossing spinners for summer steelhead!

These are sweet rods, at a good price.

Quick correction...these are actually STR's. There is a new lineup of STR models - came out last year. The 982s is an 8'2" spinning rod. Great for small stream drift fishing in low clear water. Very sensitive with a surprising amount of backbone. And yes...a good price here.

These are a great side drifting rod out of the drift boat on smaller coastal streams vs the more popular 1141 common on the Cowlitz and Clack etc. More managable in the DB etc....

Does the S at thend stand for "spinning" or does it stand for plural (more than one).

's means plural.

Sp 982s or 982c?

S stands for spinning. STR 982s

Bump for a sweet rod. Bought one of these myself and they are in great shape and this is a great price.
