Default Recipe Needed

I got a really nice Ham Bone (Hock?) and need some ideas on what to do with it. Navy Beans and ham, and split pea soup are out because the smell of both of these makes me nauseaous.

Do you have any recipe idea's for me?

thanks so much

My suggestion is to place the ham hocks in a kettle and cover complety with water, bring to a boil and let simmer until you can remove all the meat. After this is done let the pot cool down and set over night in the refrigerator. The next morning you can remove the fat that will rise to the top and remove any bones and skin that you don't need.

Now you have a broth that you can use in many different ways.

If it's the smell you don't like, I don't know how you can avoid it. It will be there no matter what you do.

The only thing I can think of is to use the broth to cook turnips. Add a little sugar to the mixture if you do this and you have a good dish of turnips. Cut the turnips in quarters.

Good Luck

Okie; Thanks so much for the turnip recipe. that sounds great.

I make beef, chicken, and fish stock for other recipes but didnt know if a "Ham Stock" was useable in other recipes. Its not the smell of the ham, but the beans/peas cooking that i dont care for.

i thought there might be some old timey recipes out there, but i googled and couldn't find much. I hate to throw it away, its a real nice, big one.

thanks again

See the Hog Jowl post in Life in General
You could use the ham bone with the greens
That's my plan with the bone I have

As Okie suggests, you can make stock from the ham bone (I do this with both ham bones and the bones from my smoked pulled pork). If you don't like the beans/peas then use the stock in any recipe that calls for chicken stock/broth and see if you like the richness that it gives the dish. Pot pies - MMMM!

How about cooking your macaroni or rice in it? Would make a killer Mac 'n cheese, jambalaya or red beans & rice!
