Re: New Boat
I'd put a little bigger motor on it. I know the $$ go up but I would try to put at least a 75 hp and really a 90 +. It seems like the biggest complaints about boats are room and Horse Power. The 19' striker has lots of room but 60 horses seems low. Plus with a bigger motor you would be all set up to hit the ocean.
At a minimum make sure to take a test drive with the 60 hp and imagine the boat loaded with crab pots or fishing partners. Good luck on getting a good deal! Let us know what you chose and how it works out for you.

Re: New Boat
Go at least a 90hp for the big motor, you wont regret it. The more power you have to get out of trouble will be worth the investment.

Re: New Boat
A new boat is nice...but for the dollars..have you not looked for a used boat??....Had a friend buy a new NR last year while some others purchased used....Those that purchased used got way more boat & equipment for the dollar....and when the time comes to sell will not lose nearly the investment...for example, the guy who purchased the New NR spend 34,000, with payments at 300.00 a month for the NEXT 144 months....figure that cost out, as to another firend who purchased a used Alumaweld for 18,000...I just personally have a real issues for what the boat dealers are asking for new boats...but if ya have the money and want a scratch free boat...guess its the way to go....I also agree with the above post...max out the HP....and DEMAND the test drives....

Re: New Boat
Their never to big till ya have to park them, and you never have enough power till ya have to buy gas!
Current boat...The dog lost 6 feet of her kennel.
I have burned up to 39.5 gallons at bouy10 in a day....40 gallon tank!
I love my boat!

Re: New Boat
Regarding New vs. Used.
Make sure you know something about boats before trolling for a used boat.
I bought a 21' Glas Ply for $2,000 and thought it was a good deal. The more I open her up, the more stuff I find wrong.
Make sure you don't find yourself having to make the choices I am...do you make the investment to fix it or get a different boat and cut your losses...
Just be careful out there... I see how buying new is beneficial (you know the maintenance history and the little problems that crop up) but it is also expensive.
Just a thought from a new boater who is in a quandry.

Re: New Boat
One more vote for more power. I have a 19 ft North River with a 175 Sportjet. I could use less power, but don't know if I would want to. You are looking at a boat with 1/3 the power I have. I can guarantee you that will not be enough.
When I was shopping I came across an article that quoted a J.D. Power survey. It listed the number one reason for dissatisfaction in a new boat owner as being insufficient horsepower in the purchased motor.
Do not get less than a 90 HP motor with that boat, and I'd be real cautious about getting less than a 125. 150 if you are getting a pump on it.
If that means you can't afford the boat, then buy something smaller used and save up. You'll be happier. I've had a lot of boats, I know.

Re: New Boat
I have an 18' Hewescraft sea runner with a 90 HP Honda, it will do about 40mph topped out...it's ok but not great. I wanted to put the 130 Hp honda on it but the boat is only rated for max 125hp...I could of went with the 115hp Honda but the weight is the same as the 130 with less hp.?? I guess what im trying to say is buy all the HP you can.

Re: New Boat
Hey Fishdog......
Just bought a new 19' Striker SE about a month ago, and got the 90-2 stroke Merc, OI for the pusher motor. 9.9 Bigfoot for the kicker. Couldn't be happier! With 4 in the boat it does 40. I certainly wouldn't recommend anything LESS power.....
Just my .02 cents..... Tim

Re: New Boat
I second tim,
We just bought a 19 striker SE in about april, 90 hrs merc 2 stroke, LOVE IT. The only complaint I have is it idles rough, I think the oil injection is mixing to rich, we're having it looked at soon. Even though it idles a little rough it still fllyyyy's 4 people and a full tank it will go about 35-40. We also learned this past week that it will pull a skier and innertube with no problems. I still had alot of power to play with. Even threw a couple people of the innertube at about 30 mph
If you go with the 2 stroke you will have less weight and more RPM's which = more speed
 we all like to go fast

Re: New Boat
Hey Drummer......
Let me know about the rough idling. I've noticed it too. Just chalked it up to the original heavy weigh oil mix in the first tank. I've only got about 14 hours on the 90, so I expect it'll smooth out over time. But I'd be interested if you find otherwise.....
thanks....... Tim

Re: New Boat
Im with Keta on buying a 4 stroke, my boat will do 40 mph with the Honda 90 and the boat loaded for fishing (people, gear, gas, top up) I wish It was a little faster, but it runs so quite and smooth that most of the time I can't tell if It's running or not. I have kept track of every ounce of gas I've burned and every mile I've run (GPS) so far my average is 5.9 mpg. It's still fairly new with only 55 hours on it. I don't know if it's going to get any better or not... I love the 4 stroke!

Re: New Boat
Forget the Alumaweld, and go look at the North River Mariner. It is built much better, more storage, better layout, and much better looking. It comes in a 17'9", or a 19' model. Put a 115hp 4 stroke jet on it and it will be about $20,000. I'll bet the Alumaweld is higher price than that with same motor!!!

Re: New Boat
I would stongly suggest a 4 stroke. I've had my Yamaha 115 for about a year and can't imagine ever being happy with a 2 stroke again. Much quieter, more fuel efficient and doesn't smoke . I can get it up to 45 mph on my 20' Searunner. HJ

Re: New Boat
Fishdog......
Go test any and all boats you're interested in, as suggested by our friends on this thread...and go with a 90, at least.
And for those who think Alumawelds are not up to par, that's their opinion, and I respect their opinion. You'll have to make your own determination.....
You're the one buyin' the boat.......
There are alot of good boats out there.... thankfully...... and I have no remorse in buying an Alumaweld....
Great luck with whatever you decide...... Tim ;>D

Re: New Boat
Got a 17' Striker with a 50 and couldn't think of less then even a 75 on a 19'
As far as the miss I did one of those no brainers and put one of my kicker plug in my big motor, my miss was gone!!!!First time I could troll with my big motor. Now that I have found what I did and fix the plug thing,
the miss is back.
Got to look into that plug thing!!!!
