cut off
I have to vent a little, because it's still buggin me today!
I took my little 12 footer out around Bachelor and the mouth of the lewis on sunday.....there I am trolling along out in front of bachelor, all by myself...there wasn't another boat that was within 200 yards of me, then all of a sudden this 20ft open sled comes cruisin up right next to me, maybe 15 yards to my right. I don't think nothin of it, but grumble about the nice wake they just left me, and keep trollin up the river. This sled proceeds to move to the left... right in my lane, and then decides to stop and rig up poles.....RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME.....so I just kept goin right at him, until I was no more than 5-10 yards away, and they then throw out their lines....now I was really ticked, they obviously saw me, and didn't care, so I just turned around and headed back the other way....anymore time in their vicinity may have ruined my day. Well, not more than 45 seconds after turning a round, I here one of the yell..."there, there it is" and they now have a fish on...eventually lost it....but man if I would have just kept goin instead of turnin around....maybe my fish?
Just wanted to hear opinions....am I the only one that thought this behavior was RIDICULOUS....or is it ok to cut somone off and stop right in front of them? What is the etiquite there? How far above someone would you go to troll the same lane they are? Would you go directly in front of them, or off to the left or right a bit?
Maybe because I am in my little 12 foot boat, that people in nice big sleds think...look at that fool, he has no clue, who cares what he's doing, you can't fish out of a boat that small, blah, blah blah
Thanks for allowing me to whine a bit....wish I had some cheese to go with it!

It's inconsiderate I think. Maybe next time they'll come in behind you and you can tilt your motor and give'em a shower.

Re: cut off
Definitely rude. I was none to happy about some of the boating antics I saw yesterday. I was anchored about 50 yards outside of most of the boats in the hoglines above and below me (still WAY inside compared to the channel). Out of probably 10 boats, 7 of them decided they need to run inside of me on their way up or down river. Keep in mind there was only about 400 yards of river on the other side of me!

Re: cut off
RUDE, INCONSIDERATE AND........well you get the point. I have a 18'sled and a little car topper. They both catch fish just fine. I like the little boat when I fish alone.
What Lured In said.....what's going on with these....jerks running THROUGH a line, when there is 1/2 mile of river in the channel.
I also saw a real jerk anchor within 3 FEET of a guy who was anchored by himself along a secluded stretch of beach (Yes, they do exsist ). I talked to the guy later & he said he just wanted to anchor up and relax for a bit and here come this *^&$^% who wants to rub rails. After I heard the guy who anchored first politly ask for the guy to move his anchor, I heard the dork say "There are some places I fish where we use boat bumpers". I said, nice and loud," Yes, there ARE places like that....NOT here!". The good news is while the 2 groups were having a "heated" discussion the original guy hooks, lands and bonks a nice fish.... . His second, so they pull anchor and go home.
I'm writing down OR #s from now on and using my cell to keep these GOONS in check.

Re: cut off
This thread is a semi common theme. No matter if it is big cruisers, jet skis, runabouts, ski boats, sleds, bass boats....you name it.
My folks have lived on the water since I was about 12 or so. I have had the opportunity to watch literally thousands of boaters in action. What have I learned? A certain percentage of ALL boaters( no matter the craft) are not real considerate of others.
Some crafts are more visible than others. Do not be mad at their boat, for it is a machine. Either feel sorry for them ( maybe they are not smart), or be unhappy that you were exposed to a jerk.
There are times when it is best for a sled to blaze by you. Even if they are only 50' away. But not usually on the big river.
Mark and the dog.

Re: cut off
Same thing here...
Saturday we're the lone anchor but for one boat 300-yards above us and small but roomy hog-line 300-yards below us. We were looking to some R&R and did not want to disturb those who worked hard get their spot early
Next thing you know some jerk sides in maybe 5-feet away from us. There we are, the two us, doing a catamaran imitation to the casual observer.
I hold my tongue until the moron starts flopping around in his boat causing him to drift right into us, ..."70-miles of G-darn river and you got to right up my behind" is I need say without making a fool of myself.
His response was to lecture me about the CR hog-line standard and that I obviously don't fish much on the CR...Blah, blah, blah.
I calmly shot back that we fish the CR enough to have put one-more in the cooler today then he did - he shut up.
PS. Saturday was a day of firsts:
1st time on the CR,
1st day fishing the new boat,
1st time fishing ever trying for springers.
1st Springer in the boat.
Nice 12 pounder - I wore two stripes of blood on my cheeks and forehead the whole day. Someone was watching over me Saturday.
Pics when film comes back from processor.
Life is good.

Re: cut off
As far as I know, the "etiquette" would be to fall into line from behind, at a reasonable distance. Stopping right in front of you was completely rude. I would have just kept fishing and come uncomfortably close to their spiffy boat if they didn't MOVE IT.

Re: cut off
It's sad this time of year.
It seems to bring out the worst in people.
Get the boat #s and turn them in. If you can do it for aggressive driving on the road, you should be able to do it for boats too.
Just remember that while some others can be dorks and treat you rude, having a positive attitude and coming out the better person will result in you hooking a fish in front of them while they go skunk.

Re: cut off
Rude. ....... I had a guy dogging me in astoria last sept. he kept weaving in and out of our line. We were catching lots of fish all week and he was there most of the time. Well I just kept "giving" in and adjusting my line until I couldnt take it anymore. I rigged my right rod with a 20 oz cannonball lead and when he cut me off from the left I slowed and ran across his transom and got all 3 lines with the cannonball. I goosed it and reeled in the gear, pulled it in the boat and cut it off. We said thanks and headed for the dock and that was the last time I saw the guy. I am not suggesting this but after 3 days of this guy trying to muscle in on me I couldnt take it anymore.

Re: cut off
Rude....I was coming down the channel Saturday at no-wake speed and some jerk comes flying by me. Had my 8yr. old daughter with me and she wanted to know why we don't go that fast. I told here see those houses sitting on the water over there? That's why! And preceded to go into some story about how she would like it if her house was always rocking. I don't know the rules of the river in that area but just looking at the surroundings I can pretty much assume that if I were living there I'd want people to keep it down to no-wake. And the guy with the big red loud go-fast-boat. I'd like to drain his engine oil some night. Just my .02

Re: cut off
Had something like this happen on the Wilson this winter. A guide, who will remain nameless (not an ifish guide) and who knows me came drifitng down into the hole I was fishing from the bank. We exchanged small talk and I'll be damned if he didn't just up and anchor right below the drift I was fishing essentially cutting off the more than half of the drift for me! I couldn't believe it because this guy was someone who knew me and just took the liberty of taking over the spot I was fishing and I had been there first
I don't need a fish bad enough to fish in those kind of situations and have cut way back on the amount of time I fish for fall salmon because this kind of behavior is commonplace! This past fall I witnessed some of the rudest and most inconsiderate behavior I have ever seen in all my years of fishing the coast.
I think this fall I'll spend alot more time on the Deschutes and other Central Oregon lakes and streams and avoid this stuff altogether.
I'm not saying it doesn't happen over there but it happens a heck of alot less.

Re: cut off
I know a guy that takes his digital camera out when these things happen and takes a shot of the boat and people. If you like you can then include a pic with your post  . This way the more times the guys boat pic is posted we can all get to know what a real horses behind looks like.

The kinder, gentler me says grin and bear it. The not so kind or gentle me says keep right on until you start to climb into the back of his boat, then maybe he'll move. Most of the time I listen to the former, but every once in a while.......

Re: cut off
I have an idea :what if we all carry paint ball guns in our boats and when idiots do stupid things like this we shoot their boat with paint, when those bonehead inconsiderate idiots come in to dock the cops meet them and give them a ticket for being a JERK and sentence them to boating safety and etiquete school!!!!!

Re: cut off
A few weeks ago we were waiting at the top of a run for some drift fisherman to finish fishing a run so we could pull plugs when these really nice guys we had talked with at the put in came floating by. once again we exchanged pleasant conversation, they had just taken a couple of fish up above. We had been anchored there probably 20 min or so and I made it perfectly clear that we were waiting to plug that stretch and I will be darned if he didnt move about ten boat lengths below me row into the slot and let his plugs out. At this point I was really ****ed so I yanked anchor rowed down next to him told him what I thought about what he had just done. his reply was he misunderstood me. I call BS he was ten feet from me when we were talking. And then to boot he floats by us down river and says if it means anything to us there was nobody home up there. I could have spit nails after that comment, but I just left it alone.

Re: cut off
What ticks me off is when someone comes trolling downhill with the current, and sets a "bead" on me, when I'm trolling uphill. There's a guy in the Milwaukie area of the Willamette who last year..wanted me to get out of his way as he was coming downhill. I didn't budge. After he adjusted his course, and on his way by he commented..."Guess you must wanna paint your boat..." and (If anyone here knows my boat) I replied..."It's not my boat that's gonna need the paint!" (With a smile). Trust me...He woulda come out for the worse.
Please pay attention to your course when you're trolling downstream!
