Default Preparation is everything

We all know it's true. Those of us with boats check things out before we journey out. But it's always important to remember why we check things out. This guy's day ended OK, in part due to the incoming tide, in part due to the kindness of strangers. He was lucky. I don't know if preparation could have avoided this situation, but since he was unable to start either engine, I suspect he was out of fuel. Preparation is a level of awareness that doesn't end when departing the dock.

i agree, you always need to be prepared. the other thing he could have done was gotten water in his gas and both motors draw off of the same tank. this was also cause some problems. :depressed:

Usually if you have water in your fuel it's because it just came out of the tank at the fuel dock (or station for you trailer boaters). Even if you have two tanks who's not going to fill them both (and the kicker tank if that's the 3rd). Carry a spare fuel filter/seperator and a strap wrench. Takes about 30 seconds to change one.

One thing is for sure, If he didn't fuel up before leaving because he thought he would save money, he was wrong. If I were the guy in the red boat and found out that he was just out of fuel I would be tempted to ask him to give me five bucks for the extra fuel it took to tow him in and for being a dork.

When I was about 20 I got a flat tire while driving my 69 Charger (God! why did I sale that car?). Anyway, one side of the car had left hand lug nut threads and the other side of the car had right hand threads. When I tryed to take off the wheel; instead of loosening the lug nuts I tightend them. I didn't know about the left hand right hand thing.

I had to call for a tow truck. The driver towed me home and said I owed him 30 dollars. I complained, and said the dispatcher said it was 25 dollars. I also told him that if I could have gotton that wheel off I wouldn't of had to call him. He asked me if I had a good spare, I said yes. He said Oh! I usually charge 5 bucks extra for people that don't carry spares. Then he told me about the right hand left hand thing. I guess that was his method of a stupidity tax.

Also, a friend told me that it cost the same to fuel the top half of your tank as it does to fuel the bottom half.

No power. In a bay. Under tow from another vessel.

Not wearing PFD's.

Sheesh.
