Default rogue-crater lake ?

Family and I are headed to Crater Lake this weekend. I'll fish the Crater one day ( as I did last year) and would like to make it to the upper Rogue another day. Does anyone know how far the drive from Crater Lake Lodge to a fishing spot on the upper Rogue and what that spot would be called so I can look it up on a map? The closer to Crater Lake the better.

Cully, it is not a long drive down. Follow the signs back down the main road from the Lodge at Crater Lake, until you hit HWY 62, which is probably what you came down from Diamond lake on, I assume. Head West on 62 toward Medford. Depending on what you mean by the upper Rogue, it is either just below Lost Creek lake and the dam or above the lake.

If you want to fish the VERY upper Rogue, above the lake, there are some good spots off HWY 62, such as campgrounds and the like. This section of the river is stocked with rainbows and if your lucky you might hit a few. It is pretty heavily fished.

Just below the lake is where Cole Rivers fish hatchery is. This is essentially where the Salmon and Steelhead fishing starts on your way down. I believe Salmon is currently closed, but steelhead is still open. The closest areas to fish with reasonabl access are the Hatchery hole (right at the fish hatchery just off HWY 62), Casey Park, right on 62 and several spots in between. Coming down 62 from Crater lake should take you close to an hour. Once you get below the lake and cross the river turn right. That is McGiver Park and will also take you the hatchery and dam. If you continue straight on 62 after crossing the river for another 200 yards, that is Casey Park. You can't miss them and the entire area is open.

Be sure to double check the regs for both species and bait restrictions. Trout may be open and a few of the 'half-pounder' steelhead may have made their way up.

Good luck.

cully, Their are several small campgrounds along HWY62 headed down to medford. look for farwell bend campground. use a single egg on a # 8 hook and a little sinker.
Be sure to stop at the natural bridge campground the Rogue River disapears underground beneath a lava flow.
futher down the hwy is lost creek lake fish turn out just after the swiming area. below the dam and before the fish hatchery is a no bait fly/lure zone of the rogue(fat rainbows their). And also try Casey park just below the bridge leading up to the lake. Great place for summer chinook and rainbows. Fish below the boat ramp here salmon fishing above the ramp. have a great trip.
