Default Alvins

I havent really given woblers a chance. I know that they work well when used right. Can you wobler experts out there give me some info on the technique? Dropper/Leader/weight...ect.

Also what to look for in action....how do you tune these to be more effective?
Thanks!

Jettin, I'm no expert but have had some success with these the last few years. I only use tufline for mainline when fishing these. The hits are hammering, and the tufline lets you read bottom easily. I use a five foot dropper with a five foot leader of about 25-30 lb. test. I normally fish water 50' deep but have caught fish in 30'. In the deep water I use up to 8-10 oz. of lead, ball type. As for tuning, I drop the lure in the water a few feet so I can still see it and then pull it throught the water fast. If it rolls, it's wrong. Bend it at the first bend behind the head, just a little, until it just kinda flutters along with no roll. This works for me but maybe some more ifishers out there will give you some more info. Good luck.

I put a little green reflective oval sticker on each side to make me feel better. I felt better when it took 5 out of 6 fish caught in the boat. Feeling better is good.

Alvins come in chrome, silver and nickel finish. What's your preference? Does it make a difference? They all look pretty much the same to me.

Hi Pete - Nice to meet ya last night, BTW

Although the three finishes look the same, for whatever reason I have found the silver works best on brite days, the nickle works well in cloudy conditions and I don't seem to do as well with the chrome for whatever reason. Maybe just happenstance, but for this late summer fishing I would recommend the silver.

Have to admit, though, that it is about impossible to tell the difference once they are out of the package and sitting side by side. If you find one that works, remember it!

Jett'in as far as action and tuning, here is what I have found. Be very gentle with your tuning. Just the slightest bend will change the action. Some people mess with them a lot, but I try not to too much. Like Steelhead said, rolling is bad. But what is really good is if you can get, well, it is hard to explain, but a sort of snap/flutter. If it sorta snaps and flutters wide put that sucker out there and hold on!

If you have it workin the way you want it but the current (tide) changes significantly, make sure you check it with the changed current too. Sometimes we have seen them start rolling when they didn't before.

The reflector tape might or might not work. I leave mine "virgin", but I know many like Tilla who slam them using it. When my buddy put some on his, mine started getting more bites!

At least that is what has worked for me...

Don't forget those Coyotes, they can be deadly at times. Never ceases to amaze me that a fish would rather eat a piece of steel than a natural bait, but it does happen.

Pete - You think you got problems with which Alvin? Look at the Coyote color selection. I'm partial to the silver/blue and silver/green myself (in the really small size). They just happen to look like all those candlefish or sandlace or what ever those skinney little guys are out there.I did just pick up a couple of bigger black/white fishscale ones though. They look fishey to me and I'm supporting the local economy !! (Thank me later Gene and Linda)

Hay Fool,
Each to there own.I've learn two things,
one If you bend them to much it will come jetting strait up to the top. and two if I straiten them just a little I get a slow back and forth sway. you need to check them now and then because the curent will change things.
No matter what 50/50 always works good for me.Just for good luck I also put some oil on a clean rag and wipe down my line and wobbler when ever it comes out of the water.

give it a try!!

Good points covered here. For me...I like to replace the Siwash with a treble tho...'cause where we fish...the "hits" are just a little "tap", not rod folders...and the trebles ensure a good hook-up.

I'm a definite fan of "Silver Plate" if you want to use silver, or nickel. Last year the half and half did real well.

We use a 6 foot dropper, and about a 4 foot leader where we fish...in about 40-50 feet of water.

Lepper,
Alvins are large flat metal lures. I would say that you could put them in the spoon class of lure as they do the same thing as a spoon and that is they wobble in the current. However, they are mostly used while fishing from a boat on anchor and are cast out behind the boat with a spreader, dropper, and a piece of lead as described above. Coyotes are also spoons that are designed to be trolled or fished while on anchor. You may find that as the temperature of the Columbia starts to rise that artificials lures like this are more effective than baits.

Jett'in fool

Stick with Steelheadslayer's set up. I use the exact same one. Try the chrome Alvin with a chartruese tip. You can't go wrong.

Tuning is a pc. of cake just don't bend them to much and like every one is suggesting, look at it in the water first before taking it to the bottom.

I also use a slider sinker incase the weight gets hooked up in the net some how, the fish can still run.

Keep an eye on your rod

I have three Alvin colors I use more than any other. The 50/50 Nickle/Brass, Nickle with Chartruese head, and Solid Nickle. To each of these I will add, usually, green lure tape about a half inch wide x 1.5" inches long. I will also add either chartruese or pink yarn (about 3/4" tags) tied to the welded ring the siwash hook is attached to. Varying the color of tape, (occasionally blue or red, but I have found green to work best for me) and the yarn gives you distinct ways of addressing color and action. I also believe the yarn helps to hold whatever secret scent you prefer.

(When I say nickle, I mean it looks chrome).

Also I know some people swap out the hooks for there preferred manufacturer, but I find the stock ones are sufficient if you keep them sharp. Also, be sure to offset the hook point from the hook shank about 1/8" or so.

I love alvins and its really the only thing I use for fall fish.

I have had the best luck with blue tip ones. I like the yarn idea and might try it on tuesday. I use the stock hooks and sharpen the tar out of em. I polish them with shrimp oil.

Tuning is important, I bend until I get a slow side to side. I really like em a lot. I will run doubles somtimes too. Alvins have to be my favorite lure in the box for fall, and now summer run chinooks.
