Re: Spinner advice
Well first off with 10 different people you will most likely get 10 different opinions on this.
Alot of people like bigger blades but I like smaller blades. Size 4 or 5 Backmore or size 5 or 6 colorado. I use most smooth blades because I think they give off more of a flash. I use 50/50 brass/nickel or copper/nickel blades the most but I will throw in a rainbow every now and then also. I like the green tip or blue tip the best. I usually use a slightly bigger blade in the rainbow than the 50/50. This is mostly bank fishing and not from a boat. Its also almost all in tidewater. I build my own spinners so I can make then how I like. I use alot of greens, reds, and oranges the most for beads. My best spinner that I have caught the most fish on is a size 5 backmore 50/50 with 1 green bead on top then the blade and then 4 beads on bottom with a green or red stiffener to a size 1 or 2 VMC treble hook. It seems small compared to alot of the spinners other guys use but I have had alot of luck with it.
If you have any other questions about my spinners feel free to ask.
Jon

Re: Spinner advice
Might I recommend Jed Davis' book on the subject? It can be found here.

Re: Spinner advice
I would second the advice of "Get Bent" and pick up the Jed Davis book. He is the man when it comes to spinner fishing and his book proved invaluable when I first started spinner fishing a few years back. I also heard that the Pen-tac company who manufactured awesome spinner components, is back in buisiness. The #4 silver or silver/gold frech blades and bodies that they make have hooked me up more than a few times in varying conditions for both steelhead and salmon. I highly recommend thier stuff if you can find it. I also used some components from Mor-Tac co. that were pretty good. Good luck

Spinner advice
I'm new to spinner fishing for Fall Chinook and Slivers. Here are a few questions I would like answered. What advantage or disadvantage do the hammered blades have over the plain blades? When is one type blade better to be used than the other? What is the best overall size and shape of blade? Who makes the best style of blade? Any type of spinner advice will be gladly appreciated.
God Bless

Re: Spinner advice
I like a #4 silver for steelhead. I make my own spinners and it is the only way to go. You can make what you need. As for salmon i have not done much spinner fishing. I caught a few springers this year and that was fun. But i am looking forward to fishing fall chinook on a spinner. I would run a #5 silver, and the trick is slow and close to the bottom, losing spinners is going to happen if you are fishing right so make a lot. When you feel that spinner just stop and you pull back then you get that huge head shake and then the fish is shooting downstream now thats fun stuff. Well good luck and happy fishing.

Re: Spinner advice
i use the blue fox vibrax in # 4 and #5 the colors are neon yellow red and anodized blue. i cut off the trebs and put on 1/0 siwash hooks then put a .5 degree bend into the hook so it runs straight.. finish up by using 50# test tuff line so if you get hung up you pull the hook straight and get that $ 3.00 honey back.. my old fishing buddy used to call me mr. vibrax .. on account thats all i got in my bag of tricks.. of course he calls me bug flicker becouse all i did was flyfish till i met him.. keith.

Re: Spinner advice
OK...let's see now..
-in the early 70's I always fished a #5 Lucky R hammered 50/50 Copper & Nickel with dark red glass beads.
- in the late 70's I fished a Backmore #5 hammered 50/50 Brass & nickel with flo red plastic beads.
- by the mid 80's I boldly evolved into a #6 Cascade Green tipped Rainbow and for the first time in my life put green beads on the shaft.
- somewhere mid- 1990's The mighty 'Rogue Influence' drew me to the the Solid Gold blade and chartreuse bead paterns. Starting with smooth Hildebrandt's, then dimpled Skagits and most recently...hammered on the inside only, CV-7 blades.
- and as of this summer, I am having a fun time with Old Fashioned nickel Indiana blades and red golf Tees on the shaft.
* Strangely...almost all of these patterns seemed to work quite well, even though they are so different. I believe an important part of the recipe is to pick a favorite spinner, boldly state that this is THE best one...and go about your business of fishing. I bet it will work !!!

Re: Spinner advice
I have to say it would have been worth it for Drachir to wear his fingers to nubbins But that is just my opinion.

Re: Spinner advice
Earlier in July when I was anchor fishing on the Columbia I had with me an assortment of all kinds and then tried different ones on different rods and never fished the same spinner more than and hour unless it was catching fish. Some days they wanted smooth blades, some dayw painted and some hammered. Also, some times through out the day one style would be working and then cool off only to have another style start producing.

Re: Spinner advice
spinnermaker, Thanks I'll give the #6 & #7's a try, and the www.BCAnglingPost.com.
BUG_FLICKER, Thanks # 4 & #5's vibrax. The tip of using 50# test tuff line sounds great.
HOGTIDE, Thanks they all sound good. I'll make some of them and give them a try. Hopefully one of them will become a favorite.
Tilla, Thanks I too agree. It would have been worth it for Drachir to wear his fingers to lil'nubbins.
Sailfish, Thanks I'll be picking up the Jed Davis book soon. Pen-tac #4 sliver and #4 sliver/gold french blades sound good. I'll give Mor-tac a try too.
Thanks again to all who have given their time to respond to this post. I always give my best effort to perfect my fishing abilities in the various techniques I try. Your valued tips are greatly appreciated.
God Bless all of you.
