Default Horseshoe Lake (by Olallie) 7-27-02

Never in my life have I caught as many trout as I did on Saturday!!

We launched our pontoon boats at the Peninsula ramp at Olallie around 7:30 Saturday morning. By 10:30, we had one small trout and no bites. The wind was starting to pick up, so we decided to fish at Horseshoe Lake (3-4 miles past Olallie). By 11:00 we could have limited out, but we were playing catch and release only. Unfortunately, I was fishing with a needlefish and caught one in the gills and it bled out. At that point, we decided to start keeping the big ones (15+") or the ones that weren't going to make it.

Well, by 8:00 p.m., we had caught over 125 trout. We ended up keeping 10 (5 each). Only one that was smaller than 15"...that was the first guy that lost his blood. We were successful on anything red or pink...didn't matter if you were fishing a roostertail, needlefish, super duper, or a spoon. Our best success, though, was on a clear bobber half full of water and a size 8 fly with a red body. The trout couldn't leave it alone!

All in all, it was a great, fun day...When I was out on the water, I kept thinking that this would be a great place to teach a kid how to fish!

BTW- after we were done, we found out that the lake was just stocked on Thursday. I imagine that the fishing will be very good for the next couple of weeks.

Hope to see many of you next weekend at the 10!
