Default Anybody want to target sharks 7/28?

Just getting a wild hair to go try for some blue sharks that everyone is talking about. Anybody headed out to Garibaldi tomorrow and want to give it a try?

I would say yes... but 8 & 3? Something about drawing sharks to the boat in borderline seas just doens't sit well with me. I think I'll wait for the water to flatten out a bit, pick up some salmon and bottom fish, and then do the predator against predator thing.

I can't believe a guy that posts a story every week about how he tried to sink his boat going across the worst bar in the world is telling me about safety! Angle, 8 & 3? I'm looking at the wrong forecast apparently. Mine says 5 & 5 decreasing to 4 & 5.

Yes I realize the forecast is glum and had I not just spoken to a friend who is at the marina right now I would not have made the suggestion. He was out in the 4 & 7 today for 3 hours and landed 4 chinook. Much like last Tuesday when I was out in the forecasted 1 & 6 which actually was more like a 4 & 10 and landed my 6 fish in 2 hours. Confused yet?

I respect the sea as much or more than most and I was not trying to entice anyone into a dangerous situation. Now... I don't have much respect towards the forecasts. If I had stayed home everytime I read a crappy forecast I would never use my boat.

Sometimes I wonder if the person who creates the forecast is out fishing on the days there is a crappy forecast! Not a bad idea!

Anyway, I'm not going either now cause I'm too damn tired so maybe another day.

Sturgn, I did end up going to Garibaldi later in the day but didn't find any sharks around. And I could have saw them if they were there because the water was flat & glassy for miles.

Ever since I hooked one about 2 weeks ago I've got the bug to catch another.

This weekend might work.

I kept one of my Salmon rods rigged with a steel leader and an 11/0 Shark hook, and a big hunk of Black Cod, waited till I saw the dark shape in the water and casted to it, was way short so I retrieved it during the retrive the Blue Shark turned towards the boat, I pullled the bait from the water and made a second cast. This time I was right on target in front of the shark about 10 feet in fron of it, the shark immidiatly sped up to the bait and the bait dissapeared. I freespooled the reel to give it a good chance at a real good hook up, the I set the hook......... Holy **** that thing took off and it was all I could do to stop it, I literally burned at least 2 layers of skin off my thumb.
I got the shark turned and faught it through 3 more powerfull fun runs, then it came up next to the boat and one of my partners grabbed the gaff, and siad " Man I hope I am ready for this????" I said get him, and the shark was in the boat, gaping jaws biting at anything it could get ahold of, it was so immpressive I could not beleive it. My 12yo son was at this time hiding up in the cabin, yelling at me to get him to seddle down, it was very funny, The Blue Shark ended up being over 6' and was my first shark in over 25 years. I immidiatly bled it and cleaned it.
We ended up landing a 5', my son is now hooked and an official Salty Dog and he cant wait to go again, and a 4' that my gaffing partner took later on. We could have taken as many as we wanted, they where schooling up to 1/2 dozen or more at any given time, we seen some that could have been as long as 8-9' it is a blast and I can wait to go again!

They do secreat uring through there skin, but if you clean and remove the stomach portion of the skin meat and all as soon as you get them then they are ok. And as far as table fair goes, they are awsome! BBQ'd they are really good. If a couple of you want to try some let me know maybe I can swing a steak or two, I got about 50lbs off of the 6 footer, and I do intend on going after them again next month sometime.

When you do, Adrianna would like to join up. The biggest shark I've ever pulled out of the water was an 8ft hammerhead (don't try this at home, kids) which was threatening and taisted like cod liver oil. But that was by speargun, not pole and reel, and I'm alwasy up for a steep bend on my peeler rod. Sounds like it may soon be time to acquire a firearm.

Baseball bat works real well to settle them down, I just stunned them with the bat then hung them off the side by the tail and cleaned then as fast as we could. Little nerve racking with your hands in the water and other sharks swimming around the boat. if the warm water moves back in around newport we may be able to get into a bunch closer to shore, but Im not against running 30 miles out and getting some Tuna at the same time!
