Kid Lake & Herring

I'm in charge of lining up a scout fishing trip and the "charge" is to find a lake where kids can be successful, maybe learn some basic boating skills and spend the night. The place that came to mind was Lost Lake (as I remember that they rent row boats..... but I'm hoping to get a few ideas. We are thinking Sept. Also....... does anyone know of the freshest herring available these days?? Thanks
