OCEAN REPORT
Not much happening on the coast this weekend. Met up with Tim (TideRunner) and hoped to get out to Twin Rocks, bang two limits and scurry home with following seast. But moderate swells but with a very short interval on top of some wind had the Tillamook bar closed at first light. It wasn't breaking, but the swells were steep and sure to be breaking all over the place when higher wind kicked in. It was foggy, and I suspect when the fog lifted the winds really picked up. Picked up a few crab real quick, the pulled the boat, had breakfast, and headed up to Nehalem. Hogjaw had a good report inside the bay last week that was plan B.
Launched and tossed pots; crabbing was fair at best, even with the strong incoming tide. We headed out to the bar and found it also not breaking, but a pretty dicey ocean. It was still foggy so we headed out slowly, hoping to find a little nicer water outside the bouy, but there were a few open water breakers around which made me nervous as I thought the bar might end up trapping us out there. So we headed back, trolled the bay, saw no fish except on the depth finder, pulled the traps and headed home.
Part of the reason I made the short venture out was to litmus test my new crewmate. Tim has a smaller boat and was well versed at getting around in the bay and managing the crab pots in heavy flow. He said he really really wanted to learn the ocean fishery so I figured this would be a good opportunity to see if he would change his mind. He didn't flinch once and I think actually enjoyed the surfing back in as much as I did.... definitely earned some salty dog water wing points. We'll do it agian on better water soon Tim! Next weekend is also looking not so good...but Wednesday has definite potential if anyone wants to do the floatilla thing.

Re: OCEAN REPORT
We crossed the bar on the Columbia at 7:00 in the fog, but it was clear at the end of the jetty dropped pots south of the jetty and went out to the CR bouy. Huge swell and lots of small kings we measured 5 fish all over 23, but under 26". My wife got 2 silvers and I got mine back in a 130' south of the 2. No KINGS today :depressed: . We released 4 wild silvers. Best silver bite I've seen all year! So far! The ocean was really kicking up about 11:00 we really were tossed around while trying to pull crab pots. Only 6 keepers
My wife kicks butt out there netting, baiting and even holding the boat in the swell pulling pots 21 years of being out fished most of the time when she comes with. I'm sure there are plenty of guys with great wives and know how much fun it is to have them do the things the we do,(ie Hunting in nasty weather, fishing when most stay home) most of the time  :depressed:
The fishing only going to get better

Re: OCEAN REPORT
Yeah it was kinda stacking up on the big blue.We did Tilla Sat and boated 8.2 kings.Water was rough(we could NOT tell where the bar started or ended when we returned).Slept in this AM when we saw the thing was closed.Stayed at the Harbor View inn, and that sure beats gettin up at 3 to get to the ramp by 5.
See you on the water.
Mark.

Re: OCEAN REPORT
Yeeha,
I would expect such a question from a Banks resident .The kings were .2 fish.Since that converts to 20%,then you should be able to figure out how much .8 is.Right?

Re: OCEAN REPORT
Fishin62, Thanks. I'm definitely still in learning mode up here, but I came up with quite a bit of friendlier ocean experience, and I'm a fast school.

Re: OCEAN REPORT
Sorry Flathead didn't mean to offend you with your vast mathmatical knowledge. Not sure about your knife crack, smoking? or still how you put 8.2 fish in the box. Didn't go to school in Banks. I could rip on you and say things like, I'm sure if we put the numbers to it I've cut up more fish then you will ever catch  Maybe you should stop in to town and tell the Banks residents you can teach them some math. Maybe some loggers and make sure you smile real big! But the day was great! and I have no worries. Sorry FF
The .2 thing was a joke you seem angry.... oh you must have to work tomorrow

Mark if you need to further your attacks on Banks and me send me an email if it's not out of your system yet?
I see your still in school!

Re: OCEAN REPORT
Well guys, I didn't go to school anywhere around here, but it seems to me the ocean is not the place to relive high school rivalries. We're all big boys and should be able to get past such old petty stuff, or better yet, take them out on the fish as a team.
Speaking of which, the weekend is going to be blown out again but Tues and Wed are looking fine. Who can get away?

Re: OCEAN REPORT
Well that's one way to test your crewmate. Take him over the worst bar in the state. I just he doesn't fail the test with you at the wheel.

Re: OCEAN REPORT
Angle This:
We are going to Astoria on Tues-Wed. Just curious; what meterological data do you have that suggests that these will be better days to fish than, let's say the weekend? In looking at the report, it will be hot in PDX, which means fog and blowing at the coast. There is a bull ebb on Tuesday so the bar will be a mess early in the AM. (6:59AM Low at -1.4) This is my take on Tuesday.
We really want to fish, but I am not as optimistic as you. Please respond with your thoughts on the conditions as you see them. I hope you are right!!

Re: OCEAN REPORT
First of all, I suggest you head for Twin Rocks instead of Astoria. Chinook fishing has been great there lately, with lots of big big fish. Astoria will probably yield mostly small Coho. I've recently learned that I don't like Astoria very much on negative tide days....too much wild stuff can happen.
As you know, beyond acceptable swell size, the key is the wind. NOAA says 1ft wind waves on Tues, 2ft on Wed. Being a short term prediction, it's probably pretty accurate. The report says slightly higher wind on the weekend, but I find it improbable that we'll see low winds for almost a week consecutively, especially in such hot weather. I'm betting the weekend will be blowing hard once again and so propose to sieze the opportunity for tomorrow/Wed.
Your call on the tides is on the money, I think, which is another reason to avoid Astoria this week. I'm thinking a crossing 1 hr after low slack should be doable out of Geribaldi, two hours at the most tomorrow. Come Wed, it may be possible to cross before the ebb, and make the first light early morning bite. If the tide keeps the Geribaldi bar closed tomorrow morning, I'll launch and moore at Nehalem and dead head my trailer back down to Geribaldi Tues eve. That way, I should be able to get out real early from Nehalem, and then head in to Geribaldi Wed afternoon with following seas.
Most probably, I'll leave Portland tomorrow morning and head out from Geribaldi for afternoon fishing, and then hit it hard and early come Wednesday either out of Geribaldi or Nehalem, and pull the boat out at Gerribaldi on Wed afternoon.

Re: OCEAN REPORT
Wow,
I guess this is why we don't joke on screen as it is hard to tell when someone is serious or not.Never intended to offend. If I did i am sorry.I am not angry with your comments as i thought we were joking.
Now back to our regular program....fish talk.
See you on the river.

Re: OCEAN REPORT
To those planning on Astoria tomorrow, I have been advising against it, despite negligible winds. NOAA has just posted a small craft advisory for the CRB tomorrow morning. See ya all in Geribaldi. Floatilla anyone?
