Default Ocean 7/17 and 718

Wow finally got the chance to get out in the ocean on two pretty darn nice days. Left out of Illwaco both days and after doing the run from Warrinton last year Illwaco is so nice. Just a short lil hop. Crossed a Lumpy but not to bad bar on Wed and started fishing North East of Buoy 2. Landed a couple of Silvers there and then the bite just Died. Heard people on the VHF talkin about a bite North of the 1-3 Line so started trolling that direction and when we were there Got our two last Silvers just as it was starting to get a Lil bumpy. Quickly we stored the gear and started headin in. North side of the Bar was wicked lookin so we headed south. Was about the middle of the Channel and had some waves breaking around us out around Buoy 4 as the tide was running out. These were by no means big breakers and were nothing to be concerned about as we easily found a seem and cruised through to bouy 4 where we made the turn to head in. Between Buoy 4 and 6 was a lil rough but at bouy 6 to the SJ2 on the South side started to lay down and by the time we were inside SJ2 is was easy swells and the boat ran wide open into Illwaco by 11:30. I was out with Crazy Horse and this was his first introduction to the columbia river Bar and he seemed to enjoy his time.
Thursday was a cake walk compared to Wed as Pop, Crazyhorse and I headed out of Illwaco to cross again a lil Lumpy Bar but again easy Bar. Dad decided we should start fishing around Buoy 4 and at Buoy 4 we dropped lines to 25 pulls and had three good size silvers in the box in about 20 mins. Thought it was going to be an easy day but the bite got a lil slow after that and the next three fish were nates one being a just short Nookie. Well finally got the 4th and then pop decided to go to 10 pulls and landed two Beautiful Big Silvers. We again Stored the gear and Headed into Illwaco on an easier Bar than Wed. Into Illwaco at 12:30.
This was a great time no issues with weather and the boat ran strong the whole time. Thanks Crazyhorse for cleanin the fish and Buying the Bait. Can't wait until Next time.

Fishinfool Out...

Those waves you encountered were caused by a strong rip. I saw it too...don't fool yourself, those breakers were double the swell hieght..which puts them in the 10 foot range...not big breakers by CRB sandards, but full on walls-o-water if they break on your boat.

Congrats on the silvers!

Good job fishin, sounds like your getting some practice for the buoy 10 fishery. All you need is 5 guys and a 4 limit per fish to match last year!!

AT,
We must have missed the same rip that you saw as I promise you those breakers were no where around ten ft. I am Very confident in what I can handle and I know 10ft isn't it. If I would have seen 10ft breakers I would have parked out in the ocean for awhile longer and let those puppies lay down. These were 3ft at the best. I am sure there were 10 ft breakers on the Bar toward the North but what we crossed was not 10 ft. Thanks for the concern though.
