Default I\'m a newbie

Hello to all Ifishers.

I just moved to Portland this year and recently found ifish. You guys have a great website. I enjoy reading the posts so I thought I would become a member.

I am just getting into salmon/steelhead so I am new to it. I caught my first sturgeon and springer this year.

I don't think I fish as much as a lot of you guys on here, but I will contribute my posts of where I have been.

Thanks for letting me take part.

Welcome kjfernie, if we can be of any service to you just ask your question. Someone on this board will know the answer or can tell you where to find it. Cagey

Welcome! Get out and fish! It's better now than in a long time. I've had more fun (and more fish - well more pounds of fish, anyway) this year than in the previous 25 years of fishing Oregon. There's lots to learn, but this is an excellent place to do it. Time to add a Summer to you Springer ... and think about those Fall Hogs!

Ok here is my fishing story.

The first sturgeon I caught was this spring, around April I think. We were fishing around Drano? on the columbia. This was the first time I had ever been sturgeon fishing. We were fishing in about 90' of water.

I started to let my line out after baiting up and I felt a bite before it even hit the bottom. I asked my buddies in the boat if that was a typical sturgeon deal and they thought I was bluffing. Well I set the hook and could tell it was a decent sized fish I had on. I fought it for a few minutes to get it up and when it was getting close to being able to net, we realized my hook and bait were tangled with another line that was actually hooked in the fish.

What had happened is that this fish was swimming around with broken off monofilament dangling and my tuff-line had become entangled. The goofy thing is that while in the net my gear came loose from the line that was hooked in the fish. My line was not even in a knot, it had just twisted with the other line, so when the pressue was off the line from the fishing being in the net, it came loose.

That was a pretty weird way to catch my first sturgeon. It was 40", so it went back.
