Wading sandals
I bought some felt soled wading sandals from the Chota company. They work great in the summer when it may be too warm for waders.
Has anyone else tried these? They sell for about $50 plus shipping.

Re: Wading sandals
I was looking at them but I am thinking that your feet would get killed by rocks and stuff like that. I will hike five miles in a day and go up over and through some nasty stuff i just dont want my feet killed. What a few of us do is buy some shoes and glue felt on the bottom it works great but you need to find the right shoe.

Re: Wading sandals
They cover your feet pretty good. Very sturdy construction but I don't know about doing much hiking in them.

Re: Wading sandals
i tried fishing in my sandals in the clackamas at eagle creek last summer. busted up the tips of my toes pretty good. i might have done better had i had felt on the sole (less slippage) but i still would've bonked my toe tips on a few rocks.
i've since gone to an old pair of hi tops, no socks and punched some holes along the side for drainage. this year, i'm shoe gooing felt to the bottom for traction. if it works out well, i might do my wader boots.

Re: Wading sandals
Hi Shane- I've had a pair for about 12 years made by Orvis and they have their uses. I wouldn't want to hike in them for too far but I had a friend borrow them because of boot blisters and he used them all week mucking around Tehepite Valley. I like Dougs approach too- my first pair of boots were hi top converse with glued felt. Hey Doug hows the search for a driftboat going?? I don't remember the sandals costing $50 seems like Orvis were cheaper ( I know thats hard to believe)

Re: Wading sandals
Hey Shane...welcome back.
The sandals sound like a pretty good deal. Last year I did some searching for something similar and ended up buying water tennies. web page So far they're holding up well. Easy to hike in too.

Re: Wading sandals
I have a pair of "regular" Chota wading boots and love them. Haven't tried their sandals.
For wading when it's hot (wet wading), I usually wear a pair of lightweight pants like Ex Officio or Patagonia and wear my regular wading boots. Just put on a heavy pair of socks so they aren't loose.
This way you still have the comfort and support of your wading boots.

Re: Wading sandals
I have a pair of Teva (sp) sandals that I glued felt to the soles. I cut the felt in cheveron shapes and glued them on in 1/2" gaps. Works pretty well. I have been up and down several rivers and have not had a problem. I tend to do a lot of hiking as well and have not had too many problems.

Re: Wading sandals
believe it or not, my nike rafting sandals provided some good footing on the rocks last week. no felt just right out of the box. obviosely felt would of been greater stability but the cool water on a 98degree day was too nice to pass up. good luck hunting for the right one.
