Cabela's set to capture checkered flag
SIDNEY, Neb. - Cabela's hits the NASCAR scene
running as they zoom by this weekend at speeds
reaching 180 miles per hour. The outdoor-sports
retailer's distinctive yellow script logo has
been chosen as a ride-along sponsor by Yellow
Transportation and will be displayed on the rear
bumper of the No. 1 Yellow Chevrolet race car at
the Tropicana Twister 300. The Busch Series
NASCAR race, scheduled for this Saturday at
Chicagoland Raceway in Joliet, Ill., is expected
to draw 75,000 race fans.
"This is the first time in the three years we've
been involved in NASCAR that we've done this,"
said Harry Gorden, Chicago Ridge City Sales
Manager for Yellow Transportation. "We wanted to
create a memento for our consumers and add to the
sizzle that NASCAR offers." The company first
considered superimposing its customers' logos on
photos of the car. "But then we said, 'Heck with
superimposing it. Let's take two or three
customers and put them on the car,'" he said.
"We're very excited about it and we hope the
other 247 Yellow customers who will be attending
the race as our guests will be excited about it
as well." Cabela's executives, along with
representatives from the two other ride-along
sponsors - Block & Company of Wheeling, Ill. and
Milwaukee"s Global Fulfillment, will also attend
the race as guests of Yellow Transportation.
Jimmy Spencer, the driver of the Yellow
Transportation car, has enjoyed three top ten
finishes in the last four races. "He says he's
due," Gorden said regarding Spencer's chances of
capturing the checkered flag on Saturday. Spencer
has 11 Busch Series victories in his career and
won his first NASCAR Winston Cup race in 1994.
Cabela's will continue its involvement in NASCAR
as the title sponsor of a NASCAR Busch Series
race, Saturday, August 17, at Michigan
International Speedway. The Cabela's 250 is
scheduled for 125 laps at the historic MIS 2-
mile superspeedway. "We have been looking closely
at the motorsports market for a few years," said
Kevin Werts, Director of Cabela's promotions.
"With the opening of our largest store in Dundee,
Michigan, which is minutes from Michigan
International Speedway, the opportunity to
sponsor this race seemed like a perfect fit."
