SPORTMANS WAREHOUSE OPENS IN SALEM
Sportsmans Warehouse has opened in Salem. I checked it out today and was impressed. They seem to have quality stuff for sale, and lots of it.
Camping, hunting, fishing ETC... and its geared to the Northwest. I Like it better than Fishermans Marine, and its close to home. The staff there was nothing but helpful and I like the customer service attidude they have. I asked about Alvin's and was advised they did not have them. The manager came out and asked what colors I would like and advised he would get them in the store.
They also had several coolers full of tackle for .99 and 1.99, kind of a sale bin thing.
I was impressed,, It is is located in the old Home Base building on Lancaster near Hwy 22.
they also have a fridge full of bait, including Herring!!!!
Thought I would pass it along.
This store is going to get me in trouble...
Jeff

Re: SPORTMANS WAREHOUSE OPENS IN SALEM
How are the prices, Jeff? Here in Albany Joe's is about the biggest show in town. We got one of those 10$ coupons, so I may have to use it! The mailman also delivered the neighbor's coupon to us, so I may not tell him

Re: SPORTMANS WAREHOUSE OPENS IN SALEM
The prices were not too bad,,, I did not compare too much,,, but the store is worth the trip in to check it out. It looks like they had about every flat/quick fish they make. They have a lot on inventory..
they have some cool taxidermy on display too.

Love that store, was at the Missoula store several weeks ago. They have everything and then some ! Prices seemed in line or lower than others for the same items.

Re: SPORTMANS WAREHOUSE OPENS IN SALEM
Where at in Salem?? It won't take much to be better than fishermans. I don't know about anyone else but I have been less than impressed with fishermans customer service the last 3 or 4 times that I've been in there. It's nice to have another option. I personanaly have been avoiding fishermans after being treated like dirt.

Re: SPORTMANS WAREHOUSE OPENS IN SALEM
I'm with you Cannonball, waiting for the one in Kennewick. I've been to the one in Spokane and the variety of selection is awesome. The wetside guys are used to a lot of selection but over here on the dry side to have everything under one roof is awesome.
My Visa card will be smokin'.

Re: SPORTMANS WAREHOUSE OPENS IN SALEM
Great store!!!! My father and I stopped in today to check it out also. The prices were in line with elswhere locally and alot of the things I checked were actually cheaper! They have all kinds of stuff. Hiking, camping, fishing, hunting, reloading, archery,e ct...and they also have a board as you walk in the door on the right that has the "latest reports" for alot of the rivers and bays like FM in OC has.
I was very impressed with their customer service as well. We asked about spinner blades and they told us that they are on the way but not there yet. We were aproached by 6 different employees all asking if there was anything they could do for us or if we needed help finding anything.
This store is going to be great and it is 100 times better than FM in OC.
The store is on the end of Lancaster Drive right where it meets Highway 22. Right next to Shopco.

Re: SPORTMANS WAREHOUSE OPENS IN SALEM
We just need one in Aloha/Hillsboro.
The stores around here are just the pitts. We need a good tackle/ boat stuff store. I know Harveys is near but I want a good store that is well stocked and not run by grumpy people.

Re: SPORTMANS WAREHOUSE OPENS IN SALEM
Only thing I don't like is they closed at 8 on weekdays. Tried to stop in last night to stock up but they were closed. I think since Joes stays open until 9 they should until they establish their customer base.

Re: SPORTMANS WAREHOUSE OPENS IN SALEM
Ok - I stopped by today on the way home and checked out the new big store. I was impressed. They had a little of everything with some sweet deals on some stuff.
They are expecting more merchandise as it has not all arrived.
I spoke to several employees and most were out from Colorado so they would have some knowledgeable employees for the store opening.
I will be stopping by here on the way thru in the future, and for those in the salem area, you got keeper here I think.
I would have liked to see more bow and arrow stuff, but they had a lot of other stuff there to make up for it

Re: SPORTMANS WAREHOUSE OPENS IN SALEM
Stopped in today and I thought I was going to cry. That store is Awesome  . Took me two hours just to browse the store. I hope this helps some the other "sports" stores in the area get there act together and start stocking their shelves or they are in for a world of hurt.
I had several employees ask me for input and that they want to know if they don't have it so they can get it in.
They only thing they looked to be short of was selection in salmon/steelhead rods.

Re: SPORTMANS WAREHOUSE OPENS IN SALEM
I noticed someone ranting about how bad the service is at Fishermans, I beg to differ. Fishermens has outstanding customer service. In fact, they have treated me really well every time I have been in there. Which is around once a week. Futhermore, what sporting goods stores have pro guides like Terry Mulkey, Chris V., and Mike Botcher working behind the reel counters, on occasion. Also, most of ther guys that work at the OC store are people that fish unlike GI Jokes, which didn't even know to put backing on my reel before installing tough line. I know sometimes they are busy and it is tough when there are twenty customers at they reel counter and only three employees, but give them a break. They are the BEST tackle shop in town bar NONE!

Re: SPORTMANS WAREHOUSE OPENS IN SALEM
Made my maiden voyage (visit) yesterday. In some ways, I was impressed. Quite a variety of things, but not a large selection. Example: just a few Lamiglas rods, few GLoomis, small line selection. There was an amazing amount of reels available, great selection there. Lots of optics, bottom end to high end (Tasco to Zeiss).
Really parallels Fishermen's in terms of what they have, hopefully they'll make a transition to more salmon/steelhead/ocean gear, and maybe a little less bass and trout fly gear.
As for prices: A Lamiglass G1000 series "Kenai Special" was $135.....at Joe's, the same rod is $169!! A container of "slinky" lead was $7.99, the same container at Joe's was $8.99. However, you need to be careful: A Shimano Catala 400/401 was $99 at Sportsmans Warehouse, but $94 at Joe's.
Don't know how they're going to advertise, whether they'll have weekly sales, or honor competitor sales ads.
I'd have to give it a guarded " ", and if I lived in Salem, a double " "
kyle

Re: SPORTMANS WAREHOUSE OPENS IN SALEM
John, I agree with you a 100% that Terry Mulkey (he taught me how to steelhead fish), Chris V and Mike Boettcher are the best, but they do not make the store. They can help when they are there, but when they are not what are we to do?
Fisherman's service is not what it use to be and the stock they keep in not enough or the right thing most time. I have been going there for years and know the differance in their service.
I look forward to the competition and may the best store win. Tight lines, Kim.

Well Kim, A few people there, that over time doing business, I have become friends with and are excellent fishermen. In fact I have fished them a few times and learned new tricks. Dave N. and Robert are both great guys and will go out of there way to help a person. As far as being out of stock, that does seem to happen often unfortantly.

Sportmans website sucks. If you want to preview any merchandise on line-good luck. The site is generic to say the least. IMHO that spells fishy

Re: SPORTMANS WAREHOUSE OPENS IN SALEM
Salmonator, no i'll stop by when going thru Salem and take a look see in person but I do alot of buying research before i purchase something and that is done mostly online. It helps me alot to see, compare and price before I invest the time and energy in driving to some "Warehouse" and then find they don't have what i need. Take a look at the Sportmans site if you dare. What a waste of space. I nominate it for the worst site in the category of sportmans gear. Since we ifishers are on the internet and gather a ton of our information from each other via this piece of plastic it would only benifit Sportsmans Warehouse to represent their stores items in a professional way. They do not.

Re: SPORTMANS WAREHOUSE OPENS IN SALEM
complaining because of a website? Jeez. I was just excited becasue Salem now has somthing besides bImart and Joes, who are mostly high priced and never have what you need.
The bait freezer at sprotsmans warehouse was huge,,, and HAD HERRING in several sizes. Joes never has that...I was impressed. If I want to E-Shop I use one of several discount webites.
When I want to buy stuff now, I go to a sporting goods store where you are understood and people who work there know what they are talking about. Fishermans Marine is fine, and I like the store, but its a 40 min drive. If I go to Joes, most of the time there is a kid who has to go somewhere else to get the ans. to the questions you ask.
I like the warehouse and will shop there, even if thier website is not the best.

Re: SPORTMANS WAREHOUSE OPENS IN SALEM
I just tried my own search on the isw.co.za site and it came up as a software co. or such. The way i have gone to the south africa site was by doing a msn search and going to a sportmans warehouse site that came up. It shown site address was as listed in my previous post.

Re: SPORTMANS WAREHOUSE OPENS IN SALEM
To answer a few questions I saw asked but not answered.
Yes they do have a board that gives all of the local fishing report for rivers, lakes and the coast.
The store is based out of Utah so they are very willing to cater to the clientele in this area.
The store has a mass amount of merchandise but needs to cater more toward the salmon fisherman. No spoons to make spinners... little gadgets like that. If you go in there, tell someone or the Mgr. what you need so they will stock it. They really want input from the local sportsmen.
The prices are considerable less than Joes. About 10.00 on the cheapest downrigger and the same on a crab cooker. Basically everything I compared was more expensive at Joes.

Re: SPORTMANS WAREHOUSE OPENS IN SALEM
So.....
Now we have the name and location of the store, the phone number, the website address... Where is the billing department number so I can see how much they will thank Ifish for all the advertising?
Out of respect for those that DO pay for advertising on ifish, I request that you please leave out phone numbers, web addresses, etc.
Discussing a store's good and bad is fine. Sharing helpful information is fine.
There however, is a fine line crossed when saying one store is "better" than another store that actually supports our banter here.
Please refrain from posting businesses contact information unless they are an ifish sponser, and try to be respectful of businesses that help to maintain our site.
I've been grinding my teeth over this for a while. I am guessing that it didn't start out to deliberately advertise, but advertising in this manner is against user policy and needs to be noted.
You might reread the user policy again if you have forgotten some of the details.
Thanks,
Jen

Re: SPORTMANS WAREHOUSE OPENS IN SALEM
Jen,
A suggestion, you should contact them in regards to maybe becoming a sponsor of the board. If they are as interested in being a part of our outdoors as everyone says they are it would be a good way for them to get their name around. And besides, a little competition is always a good thing.

Re: SPORTMANS WAREHOUSE OPENS IN SALEM
I went to the warehouse and bought a Pen Model 340 reel and had them put on 300 yds of Power pro line for Halibut fishing this last opening. Got a large Halibut on at 500+ feet and noticed a frayed spot on the line the first time I let it down .Got the fish in,74# true weight, and was a little ticked that the new line had a bad spot in it. I took it in to the Sportsman's warehouse and they immeadiatly took it all off and not only replaced it,
they added an add'l. 225 yds. of the same line to completly fill the reel. How great was the service? I am going to do all the bisness I can with them. I haven't had that kind of service in a long time.A fine place to shop for fish &hunting gear. Propwash

Re: SPORTMANS WAREHOUSE OPENS IN SALEM
That's a great idea, but I have a waiting list for this category of advertising, and they aren't even on it.
I don't want to fill ifish up with advertisements. I like to have only a few, thus making those spots more valuable.
There's a method to my madness.
