My fisherman's derby report.
the good part was enjoying the company of Kingfisher anchored up with us throughout some of the day. Fishing was slim pickin's. We moved at least a dozen times in search of old diamond sides. We managed one keeper for the boards, but only a few others landed. We just did'nt have the Mojo nixon going. Oh well, it was a nice day on the weater and we found some new spots to fish, so it's all good!
Glad to hear some of the other Ifishers did well.
see ya next year.

Re: My fisherman's derby report.
We had a great time.. Nice seeing you GBS..
Our fishing was lean, only finding shakers. I found my brother in law on the water.. he proceeds to slay two with his buddy 57" and 52", and insult to injury he wasn't in the tourney, just out for a day of gators. I think he will be invited to my anchor my team next year.

Re: My fisherman's derby report.
Had a great day with some good friends and got into some nice fish. Our total was only 6 lbs short of third place! Man I sure wanted that trophy.
Fresh dipped smelt in the Willamette (some of you know where) was the ticket.
Heres the first two caught by the happy couple.....
And the one I caught, sure was fun on the salmon rod....
Now back to the springers!!!

Re: My fisherman's derby report.
Wow! What Gators! Tried yesterday in a boat with an eighty year old man and another redhead. Too much engine problems! The inboard would not keep running and the kicker stopped out in the middle of the river near the west end of Swan Island. My poor IM7 Berkely got stepped on twice on the end of the handle!!!! Saw Greenbuttskunk breifly and there was no bites for sturgeon. Had a good day otherwise and the McLoughlin Steelheaders Auction and Banquet was a blast..Gonna try for springers from the bank this Noon. judyfish99

Re: My fisherman's derby report.
We started out with a 48 inch fattie and thought it would be a great day. The company was goos w/ Skipper, Smily and got to talk w/ GBS. We moved and lost another keeper and watched a couple next to us bag 2 keepers within a half hour. They wouldn't give em up to us though. All in all a good day and good banquet. Now lets get sme springers!!

Re: My fisherman's derby report.
the winning team was a guide captaining 2 teams.
They really cleaned up. Guess they place second last week at the joes derby. They wone for most weight, biggest fish, second third, all kinds of stuff. Thye had like 8-9 rod/reel combos and tons of trophies. It was crazy!

Re: My fisherman's derby report.
The winner was guide Dave Maroon. He took the first, second, and third largest fish. Biggest fish was 41 pounds. He also won first and second in the team events. That only left one prize not awarded to Dave's team. Pretty remarkable.
We fished the Willie and had one 53 incher.

Re: My fisherman's derby report.
It was a great day for catching shakers. We had non-stop action all day, but no keepers. The boat next to us caught a mid 50's fish that would have taken first place in the big fish, this thing was FAT! We fished the Willamette, with fresh smelt.
Off to springer land now!
Good luck,
Scott

Re: My fisherman's derby report.
Anyone else think it's hard to believe that Maroon has won this thing 3 times in a row  I've been in alot of tournaments and very rarely does the same boat win it all the time... not even when there is hundreds of thousands of dollars to win.
My hat is off to them for pulling this off

Re: My fisherman's derby report.
I think they need to change the rules so the guides are in a different category like any other type of tourny a Pro group and Amateur group.

Re: My fisherman's derby report.
Boedy that's not a bad idea Two classes one to show who the top guide is for the day and a private team champ. I even have a hard time with the Guide ending up with the heaviest fish which places both of his teams with maximum weight. The rules are the first keeper tagged no switching or culling fish. They need to have some tournament observer boats. Nowdays everyone has a video camera in Hawaii they record each catch for verification in some tournaments we could do the same. If the food is the same and more of the hoeky prizes and if Maroon wins again I will never fish the Fishermans derby again.
Now that I I would say they need to do something about the team prizes.... Give a team rod and reels and then give the next team airhorns, hats, cheapo nets whats up with that. First set of prizes went to the low # teams GOOD stuff. All the prizes should be comparable in price is all I'm saying.
#1 Pick a day with the correct tide all morning
Sorry... I got bent!!!

Re: My fisherman's derby report.
Hey GBS what was wrong with your boat at the ramp in the morning? We were launching and you had to paddle to get out of the way, we did wait for you. I saw you later that day on the water running and it all looked good then.

Re: My fisherman's derby report.
Same thing happened at the GI Joes derby two teams one captain = being able to load up one team to win. I was outside the expo waiting on them cleaning fish at the GI derby last week and over heard what ended up being a top 3 team talking about what fish they would put with what team so they could have the best shot at winning. Sounds like the same thing happened at this one and that's a shame.

Re: My fisherman's derby report.
Jet, it was just my stupidity. Was so jacked to get out I did'nt realize the power kill switch had been knocked to the off position. Hard to get a motor to fire up without that. Good thing I had 2 batteries.
Some friends fished a hole up in the gorge that they daid must have had about 30 keepers taken from it. Only big enough for 4-5 boats. They hooked 5 keepers in 45 minutes. I just wonder if somebody baited the hole with chum to get so many into the hole. Seems Odd. They said there were so many in the hole they could feel them rubbing against their lines. I sure hope everybody was being honest, and I agree, "culling" stinks. It's not fair to the others fishers, or the fish.

Re: My fisherman's derby report.
That's why you have to rcord the length on your tag. Maybe ODFW should be doing a tag inspect too.Boedy what you overheard I guess I would consider that cheating too

Re: My fisherman's derby report.
It was a fun day fishing as Kingfisher said. The prizes were a little lop sided though. I think some were obsolete. We received a trolling/down rigger rod. It was made by W.W. Griggs and I tried to find some info on them and couldn't. HHHmmmm. The strangest part of it was how the line went in the center of the rod, meaning no eyelets to step on. Anyways they also ran out of sausage like half way thru the dinner. How would have thunk? There were a lot of people there and the food could have a bit nicer. I heard last year they had steaks and ribs. Any truth to that?

Re: My fisherman's derby report.
I heard a lot of complaints too about the food not being Ribs and Chicken... Oh and they ran out...completely. my guess is the noodles were a great way to recover from not having enough food. There were a lot of people left when they had to start cooking...not sure who messed up again, but at least there was food.

Re: My fisherman's derby report.
I agree with most of the comments. Win one major prize spet aside. Amatures & guides seperate. The give aways for all but a few suck. I even had worst spagatti than in the joint.
