Default Question on zinc plates???

My neighbor's new 20ft. Thunderjet seems to be starting to pit from electrolis or ??When he purchased it last fall,I was noticing that the two zinc teardrop type weights in the rear of the boat seemed alittle on the small side to me.I did a search because last fall I read a really good post here on this very problem, but I can't seem to find it now in the search section.Would appreciate any help on this that anyone would be willing to share.I'm thinking maybe larger plates welded on the back and *** even a main kill switch off the battery when the boat is not in use. Thanks in advance for any sugestions given..

Sounds like more of a problem than just Zincs. Possibly a ground directly to the hull, or a screw through a ground or small short. :depressed: Put an ohm meter on the boat with the motor running. Then Shut it off and see what develops with the ohm meter. If you don't understand, find someone that can. Your Boats life is a stake!

I researched this recently since I just bought a sled that will be moored periodically. What I ended up doing was to put magnesium anodes on my hull instead of zinc. They are called freshwater anodes and be bought from West Marine. Anyway it seems that in freshwater most zinc anodes develop a coating over time that renders them almost useless. Watch out if you go in saltwater very much......sounds like the mag anodes will wear out very quickly.
