Yeah - First Summer Chinook
Took my oldest boy (13) on his first salmon and steelhead trip today. Fished out of St. Helens with someone who provided good fellowship and a good time. And worked hard so we had a shot at some fish.
After 70 hours plus chasing springers with the big zero, I told my boy, first fish on my rod will go to me. He understood. I only had to wait 11 hours for my first summer Chinook as my number came up around 3:00 pm - respectable 19 lb keeper. He enjoyed the experience as much as I did and is hooked.
We fished hard - started out a 4:00 a.m. Overall slow (but not as slow as elsewhere it appears) - we saw 4 other salmon landed and a couple of steelhead. Most fish were nats. Deeper water - 20 to 30'. Alvins and K-Lures seemed to work - others were caught on X5 flatfish (flame orange) and flourescent red spinners.
Mmm. Experience that salmon crackling and popping on the old bbq. Good day indeed.
