Smile 13-Year-Old Boy BDay Present Ideas

Any ideas for a 13-year-old's birthday present?
My son is turning 13 and isn't sure what he wants.

He like sports, Boy Scouts, outdoors (camping, fishing etc).

I have a few ideas, but wanted to get some different perspective.

Money in the form of the gold $1 coins in a chest.
Treasure map with clues to the next part of the map at each point
-maybe he finds the shovel as part of the last clue
Bury it at the end

He won't forget it....ever.

Maybe a GPS? Geocaching is very fun and if a boy likes being outside, there is quite a bit to do with it. My 5 year old girl wants one but I think I will hold off a few years.

A Fly shop shopping spree. Get him into Fly Tying and allow him to get whatever he will need to tie one or two patterns, and after he has mastered those you guys can make subsequent trips to get new materials for new patterns.

Fly tying is a great thing for kids to learn. It keeps them busy, creative and gives them a sense of accomplishment after they catch a fish on a fly they've tied. Hell, he could get good enough to tie commercially and end up making you money.

Lots of great ideas.
The Boy Scouts has a new geocaching merit badge... and I think that intersts him.
He also loves fly fishing... so the fly tying is also a great idea. I started tying myself when I was about his age.

Keep 'em coming!

A new boat to take dad fishing on?

This is a rough age to get things for your kids. I think if you combined the GPS idea with the chest of gold he would love it. Program the GPS with coordinates to a map, on the map give directions to the shovel (maybe his own e-tool as a present) and at that site have more GPS coordinates to the treasure!

well what has he been talking about lately? i know most little kids start bringing up things they are interested in quite often near b-days. some are blatant and some are not. the not so blatant ones are the presents he'd mostly enjoy because, quite frankly, he's not talking about them a whole lot because he doesn't think he has a chance getting it.

My son just turned 13 this summer. He asked everyone for the same thing... money
But it turned out well, he was saving all of his babysitting money and his birthday money for months, then he bought a new .22 with his own money. He is very proud of it. He even used it on a recent Boy Scout shooting outing. All of the other boys were jealous. With a 3x9 scope and a bi-pod he was shooting tight groups when the other boys were just doing good to hit the target.

Fly tying is a good idea, too. I started much later but wish I would have gotten into it. I took an inexpensive class which really helped me a lot and you don't need the expensive stuff when you are starting out.

Last thing and then I will get off my soapbox, middle school age boys, even though they don't say much, really benefit from time with dad. I work with kids and you have to trust me on this one. If you can find something that he likes that you can do with him, well, there are a lot of benefits for you both down the road. I remember my dad and I hunted ducks almost every weekend when I was in those grades and even though we didn't have a lot of big talks, I think the time was very important and has made our adult relationship better. OK, stepping back down now.

My buddy told his 12 year old son 5 months before his birthday he could have $500.00 dollars and he could spend it on anything he wants. The kid said ok and the day of his birthday he got the money and asked mom to take him so he could pick up his gift. The Kid had matching custom rods made for him and his dad and the guy who built them shaved $200.00 of the normal price. His mom knew about it the whole time and she bought matching cases and reels. The kid came home and showed his dad the rod and reel and case. About an hour later the kid called Dad upstairs and presented him with his. When Mike tells the story which happened 10 years ago it still brings tears to his eyes.

A Marlin 1894C .357

Shoots .38 Spec for plinking, plenty for deer out to 150 yards with 158 gr. bullets.

Recoil is plenty mild for a 13 year old boy.

If he really likes camping, backpacking and the like, you might include a Visa gift card and a Campmor catalog. He'll spend hours trying to figure out how to spend his money!

I know some might scoff at the idea - but I'd simply ask him outright what he'd like, and if it's not totally unreasonable, I'd get that. You only turn 13 once, and it is the beginning of 7 of the most difficult, tumultuous years in most people's lives - the teenage years.

If he loves fishing, let him pick out his very own rod/reel combo, or his very own tackle box. If he likes hunting or shows interest in getting involved in shooting sports - maybe his own youth rifle or shotgun. You said he likes geocaching - his very own GPS, a compass, and some topographical maps would be cool - so long as they also come with a trip out with dad

Good luck, and happy birthday to your boy.

A 20 gauge shotgun is hard to beat... so useful for so many things. A quality levewind reel, good line and moderate rod....

If he already has those things, how about a Dremel tool and few different tips (cutting wheels, rounded head bit etc.) I love my Dremel and it has lasted for 15 years and is great for engraving, carving, making things fancy and customized, labeling and cutting off bolt ends. Don't forget the safety goggles. So few kids these days have any kind of artful/manufacturing or repair skills and instead rely on already created entertainment (movies, video games, or highly organized and non-creative sports). A dremel can be used indoors, in the shop or garage, is safe and a great way for him to express himself and make gifts for others too. Cost? about $75 I think. C.W.

Get him a decent roll around tool box and a starter set of quality shop tools. These will be the beginning of a long future relationship with DIY projects, and getting to repair damn near anything he ever needs too. 10, 20, even 30 years later he may still have most of those tools along with many many more that he has added over the years.

I know I have.

As for other ideas with really random price ranges.....
-A guided fishing trip locally, out of state, or even out of country.
-High quality gas or electric R/C car to build.
-Maybe rent an all nighter at a paint ball park for him and his closest buddies.
-Dewalt cordless tool set.
-Laptop/Notebook.
-Metal detector.

A lap top. or a phone. . I like to use the phone as a leash. My daughter became a computor wizard by getting a lap top at a young age and helped her get good grades and prepare for college. They have really cool light foam remote controll air planes that fly on battery power go slow and are quite fun for under 100 dollars you can get them at hobbie stores(I fly it all the time). I bought my boy a used kayak on ifish for 100 bucks and he loves to take it out on the willy.(I use it to bass fish)

If he is planning to stick with scouting he should just be getting into backpacking. Good quality pack, good quality sleeping bag, good quality tent, good quality stove. My son has gotten all of the above except the stove but he aslo has a B-day approaching.

Take him for a trip up to Cabelas!!

Both of you would have fun. Maybe give him a "shopping spree" amount that way he can get what he wants (with your approval of course...)

A good digital camera or binoculars even a ipod or similar can work too!!
