Summer Run Chinook
Ok so we have a expected run of over 140,000 fish.
There must be some of you that know how to fish this run and hopefully you will share the info with us.
1. When is a good time to fish for them?
2. How do you fish for them?
3. Where is a good place to fish for them?
4. Herring, plugs, shrimp ?????????
Or do we just fish them like the rest of the runs and either troll or anchor in the usual places.
A big thanks from all of us to you who share this info with the rest of the ifishers.

Re: Summer Run Chinook
I'm sure techniques in 1973 were a tiny bit different than they are today. But would be interested in hearing from someone that fished them back then as well.

Re: Summer Run Chinook
Ampersat,
My understanding is that these are fish bound for the upper Columbia and Snake. Not fish that will be in our local tributarys.

Re: Summer Run Chinook
troutguy is right, they are heading to upper Columbia tribs.
As far as catching them we'll have to see. They should be some what like catching up river brights.
Also, many of us have caught them on steelhead gear (spinners and faltfish) fishing durring July.

Re: Summer Run Chinook
I suggest large golf tee or cherry bobber spinners. Worked in '73.......

Re: Summer Run Chinook
It's my understanding that these "June hogs or summer Chinook?" travel shallower than fall Chinook. Common sense (and some people in the know) tell me that with cooler water temps and higher flows that these fish travel as shallow as 10' to 12' at times. A couple of days ago we were fishing for Steelies in about 13' of water and my buddy caught a Chinook that didn't quite look like a springer or a fall fish, and it was clipped, so we figured it might be one of these summer Chinook.
It's mighty exciting to be able to keep a clipped Chinook while fishing for Steelies, just look at the counts going over Bonneville!
What Husker said, we were fishing red f-7s and so was the other boat with us when they got one too.

Re: Summer Run Chinook
The bankie steelheaders are seeing these guys roll in shallow water. Flows are still pretty high. I am going to start shallow.
Good luck.

Re: Summer Run Chinook
Just fish your favorite rigs and spots for summer steelhead...the chinooks will come. We have landed/ released salmon each day the last 3 days. Everything was taken on small flatfish.

Re: Summer Run Chinook
I use small rainbow and half-fast spinners in 50-50. Charteuse golf tee beads. Like everyone else says, fish the steelhead slots, and you'll get slamon. I think the salmon run a tad deeper than the steelhead.

Re: Summer Run Chinook
fishon you should do just fine fishing for them with spin glows. the challenge is where to fish for them from the bank with water at 27'. is this a high number according to the link off ifish the high is 35'. do you guys suggest the lower columbia river or upper columbia river. I've been hitting the small trib for the last couple of months and don't remember if it's fishable from the bank at 27'.
Thanks, in advance.

Re: Summer Run Chinook
Spring chinook is over. The dam counts are posted at zero for some time. Any chinook you catch right now is a summer chinook Today I spoke to an old timer who used to fish summers. He looked at my tackle and suggested the small gold and red wigglewart.

I have used an alvin wobbler in the fall near St. Helens. We knocked the tar out of em,,,, any advice on using them to catch, or should I stick to spinners, spin glo's and flatfish???

Re: Summer Run Chinook
In the last two days..I've seen flatfish (U-20size) and small flo-red spinners take these fish...we've been fishing in less than 15 feet of water.
