Default Deschutes Steelhead

Any word at the Mouth/Lower Deschutes? I wanted to fish steelhead over the holiday next week, but not sure enough fish are in the river yet. Thanks!

A couple of more weeks. I always start 3rd week in July at the mouth. Some years start out better than others.

Still early, I heard of a fish caught by a trout guy nymphing at the gate keepers house a few weeks ago but it's not time to fling wets yet. Watch the dam counts, we should see a good shot of fish in late July and then it will die for a bit. Late August through September it will get more consistent. Hint!!! Fish way higher than the crowd, you will be able to cover a lot of water with no pressure and be pleasantly suprised at your success

cheers,

MM

The rule of thumb I have always used is that it is time to fish the Deschutes when 1000+ fish are going over the Dalles Dam. By the looks of the current numbers, that is still a few weeks away.

i too am ready to hit the Deschutes. Yesterday there were 1200+ over Bonny and 400+ over TD Dams so I would say anytime this coming weekend and after would be worth the trip. You gotta love early July when the crowds are fewer. Does anyone have the powerboat schedule handy? I know it's every other weekend, but which ones are on/off. Just a little question for fun.............which side do the hikers/bikers here prefer when they go up from the mouth?????????? I usually do the east but like the west as well. CNB

I enjoy fishing from both sides, but have had the most success on the west side. Just across the river from blackberry is where I landed my first fly-caught Deschutes steely. When I go up the east side, I hike up to the alfalfa patch and work down. Damn, now I really want to go. I may have to try an early scouting trip next week.

We camped at the State Park this last weekend, my son had a Baseball Tournament in The Dalles. They did a little fishing between games but no luck. Not much going on just a couple of boats going out & fishing the Columbia. Very windy all weekend. Should pick up in a couple of weeks.
