Coon Island Salmon/Shad ?
Just wondering if any salmon are still being caught in the lower channel. Also who was that Ifisher in a blue alumaweld boat this last sunday that was just slaying the shad? They had a couple of young girls on board and were using green/white lures. They must have boated 100+ shad. I was anchored below you, grey alumaweld with the American flag on my VHF antennae. We had one good takedown that might have been a salmon. We caught over a dozen shad while salmon fishing.

Re: Coon Island Salmon/Shad ?
Fishhuntr2,
I was at Coon island also on sunday. Caught alot of shad and a buddy of mine hooked into a springer using the brass and green Dick nite ( lost the fish). Thinking about making one last trip to the area for the year on friday. Can anyone tell me if the shad fishing is still holding up at Coon island ( any reports from the last couple of days) It seems to be getting a little late in the year, compared to other years. Thank you.

Re: Coon Island Salmon/Shad ?
FF, are you going to fish Coon this friday, June 21? If so I might be seeing you there. I don't work fridays and usually fish. What type/color boat will you be in? We caught shad in several spots I anchored at so think that there will still be shad to catch for a while yet.

Re: Coon Island Salmon/Shad ?
Fishuntr2,
I will be there friday in a red and tan colored drift boat. I am taking my son and a friend there about 9:00 in the morning, fishing for a few hours and then heading down to the Rogue for a 2 week vacation. I have normally been anchoring up near the 5 mph. marker in the channel. What kind of boat are you going to be in? Thanks
Frank

Grey Alumaweld 17 ft. stryker, Dark grey top, grey 60hp Marineer and small merc troller. American flag flying from my vhf antennae. Where is the 5 mph marker? I have been anchoring off the Coon Island dock. Sauvies Island channel. I have seen a red/tan drift boat around.

Fishuntr2,
The 5 mph no wake sign is on the same dock that you are referring to I believe. Your boat sounds familiar. I am considering going after steelies in the Columbia. I will have to ask my son what he prefers. maybe we will see you at Coon island on friday. Good luck!

Re: Coon Island Salmon/Shad ?
Blue Alumaweld Sea Dory, ifish stickers on the sides, with two little girls just wailing on the shad............why, that would be me.
We didn't get 100 quite but we couldn't get them all in the cooler. Some doubles and a couple of quick triples.
Great way to spend Father's Day with a brother and his girls fishing their buns off.

Re: Coon Island Salmon/Shad ?
Crabbait,
Good job on getting those girls into some fish, bet they had a blast! You were definitely anchored in the right slot.
Fishing Freak,
I have also been thinking about trying the Columbia for steelhead. Last year I fished the mouth of the Cowlitz a couple of times but didn't do any good. I have picked up some fall chinook there though. I still want to try and get a salmon in the boat for the month of June and am wondering if its possible to still pick up a salmon around Coon and are there steelhead coming up through there? Last week a boat next to me was fishing what looked like steelhead gear, small red flatfishs.

Re: Coon Island Salmon/Shad ?
Coon Island is in Multnomah Channel. Be very careful of the deadheads (non-musical) hiding just below the surface. There seem to be a lot of them in some areas of the river.

Re: Coon Island Salmon/Shad ?
Husker, Sorry to hear about your tire. Did you nail any shad?
Fishuntr2,
I am not sure if they catch any steelhead near coon Island or not. I buddy of mine has picked up 3 steelies fishing up river from Fred's marina. Also a couple of friends landed some nice springers last weekend near Fred's. I would think that there is still some springers left in the Coon Island area. If you look in yesterday's Oregonian sports page, there is a good article on columbia river steelies. If I wasn't leaving for the Rogue tomorrow afternoon for 2 weeks, I definately would be out on the Columbia. Good Luck!
