Re: polorized shades ?
I just bought a pair of Hobie polarized sunglasses at Costco. They have Maui Jims also. I liked the Hobies better on me, however most people will tell you to get the Maui Jims. $60-$70 will give you a lot of options. Best of all, the girl behind the counter fitted the frames to me just like they were made for me. No fishing store or mall shop can or will do that.

Re: polorized shades ?
I'm in the optical business and would recommend grey for fishing. You can buy brown or grey. Brown is ok but I would buy grey polarized lenses for fishing. Polarized lenses block the glare off the water and allows you to see fish in shallow clear areas. There great for driving or just blocking glare in the outdoors. If you need a correction or like me need a bifocal get a pair of no-line bifocals. You will pay more but they are well worth the investment.

Re: polorized shades ?
I have to say Amber lenses have worked the best for be on both sunny and cloudy days.
I have had grey but they dont seem to lighten up the water as good as the Amber ones do.
I go through 3 to 4 pairs a year so i just buy the el-cheapos at walmart around 10 bucks and they have worked great for me. One major thing you want to make sure they have are the side guards. The glare can get really bad when the sun comes in through the sides.
Just my $.02

Re: polorized shades ?
Make a search on this site for polarized sunglasses... lots of good info.
I wear hard contact lenses and consequently I am exteremly light sensitive...!!! I wear my sunglass 365 days a year!

checkout this site....
I recently bought a pair of Maui Jim's after having Oakleys and Revo's,Rayban, Serengetti etc. Maui Jim's are the best one the market!

Re: polorized shades ?
I prefer amber, they seem to work the best on brighter days.
Check out the new Native glasses at GI Joes. They are $100 bucks, and they come with three different lenses that you can change yourself. Best of all they have a lifetime NO-FAULT warrently. That means if you sit on them, they replace them...not bad!

Re: polorized shades ?
Nothing better than a good pair of polarized lenses on the water. I have a real hard time reading my LCD screen on my electronics though. The polarization makes the screen nearly invisible. Anyone else have that problem?

Re: polorized shades ?
I've liked Smith/Action Optics with glass (not polycarb) lenses for years.
My choice is amber/copper for most conditions, including the tropics.
Gray for extremely bright conditions including glaciers. (In normal light, gray is so dark it will have you yawning)
Yellow for low light times, like after sunset flyfishing or winter steelheading.

Re: polorized shades ?
Clackman,
I have fly fished for a long time and the color of glasses makes a ton of difference. The gray is way to dark for most fishing days in oregon. (not a lot of sun) The amber color is better, but the off yellow is by far the best color to spot fish with. This color will work on the sunny days and on the dark and gloomy days.

Re: polorized shades ?
I new a guy who spent $285.00 for a pair of shades.
My comment was something like, "What were you smoking?"
His comment, "Well, a yeah man, there like Titanium dude - ya know what I mean."
OK, we know what he was smoking.
I've used a $10-15 cheap pair of shades for many years. Still able to watch a #4 Teeny Nymph 6-10 ft. down.
If you have money to burn, I'll give you my mailing address.
One thing I have noticed with some of the shades, if you get the ones that fit real close to your forehead, early in the morning they will fog up a little bit. Just the moisture in your eyes seams to fog them up a little. As you chase that Steelhead down stream, and you start to sweat - you go blind.
I find the grey ones too dark for spotting fish.
I use the amber colored lens.
Probably the most important thing to check is if they feel good on your ears.
And check to see if you can look down - do they fall off your head. Good thing you didn't pay $285.00 for those glasses, you just dropped them off the bridge. Hey don't laugh, if you haven't done it yet, you will.

Re: polorized shades ?
I was always one for cheap "inexpensive" sunglasses and consequently lost them or broke them.
I graduated to Costco Serenghetis ay $65 a pop and they lasted no more than 6months before the frames broke. Screws fell out etc.
At the sportsmen show two years ago I laughed at the vendor trying to sell me a pair of Ocean Waves "Boca Grande" designed for salt water fishing in sunny areas. $190 a pair! I got her down to $150 and laid out the card. I've never been sorry. These glasses are bullet proof! 4 layers of laminated polarized hardened glass that can be safely cleaned with a towel, paper napkin, your shirt tail.
I've come in after a full day on the water with clear eyes and a very rested feeling I never got with any of the others.
While I don't advise this, looking directly at the sun causes little discomfort. Reflection off the water is zero.
Add all this to the fact that a $150 pair of glasses make you aware of their location. I never have misplaced them like the cheap ones. Proabaly saved 50 - 100 bucks of replacement costs over the two years.
Besides the green mirrored lenses let you girl watch without being detected by your wife, heh, heh!

Re: polorized shades ?
so what do the eyesight impaired do for polarized optics? i wear glasses (never tried contacts, never will) and while i can see pretty ok without them on, i end up getting a headache after five or six hours from eye strain. i've seen some clip on styles but they all look really stupid.

Re: polorized shades ?
Prescription optics ... I have polarized no-line bifocal sunglasses tinted to Gray 88. With prescriptions you can get exactly the tint you want .... except light weight glass lenses. For lenses big enough to block out peripheral light, glass lenses would shear off my nose, so I'm stuck with hardened plastic.

Re: polorized shades ?
I have been wearing glasses since I was 14 years old. I have a pair of polorized sunglasses that were made for me when I retired. Every year I have to spend $100.00 dollars for this pair of glasses, because my eyesight has changed.
I have tried amber lenses, I have tried photo grey's, I have even tried yellow lenses. I even tried the clip-on sunglasses. If you have a boat I do not recomend the clip on sunglasses. They fly off in the bay.
You can only get the polorized glasses in grey. I talked to a optometrist about the polorized sunglasses. He said, That the polorized sunglasses work the best for sun blockage against the UVA & UVB rays of the sun.
Haven't you ever been outside for the day with your polorized sunglasses and come in and find you look like a racoon, because the glasses kept all the bad rays out of your eyes. Which is what causes damage to the eyes.
I agree you can't see anything when you get in from outdoors, and I can't see my LED screen too well, but if that's the price I have to pay to keep my eyes from being sunburned I'll do it.
I'll stick with the Dr. and keep my eye sight.
