GTTLC,
The Deschutes is at the end of the salmonfly hatch and folks are reporting success fishing nymphs like a bead-eye prince deep, or caddis under the alders. Read lots more on the Ifish Flies and Lies Forum.

Last Cast - I can echo Pete's comments. I was up at Warm Springs, Mecca Flats last Sunday, 6/9. Lots of salmon flies in the bushes - especially above Warm Springs. Fish were not keyed in on them. I got in a zone nymphing a Prince below a Elk Hair caddis.

Fishing on the Deschutes below shears was excellent last weekend. Don't fall for the biggest mistake most people make on the Deschutes..That is: Don't wait to see fish rising before fishing a dry fly..
The fish WILL!!!!! be keyed in on caddis. Size and color matter very little so I stick with a tan #14 elk hair. The best fishing will be on steep riprap banks with ot without overhanging bushes. I prefer banks with bushed because they feel more fishy.

Here is my recommendation.

Start early throwing a #8 prince with a #16 hares ear, as soon as you see a good number of caddis flying around or in the bushed, should be around 10am, switch to the elk hairs and fish them along the deepest pocket water you can find along the bank. Tha fishing WILL be good all afternoon. Then in the evenings switch to a #8 brown soft hackle, fishing it on a swing anywhere where you find fish rising..

If you don't catch fish doing that it is because of your location if you don't catch fish MOVE until you do..

That is how you have a good days fishing on the Deschutes or at least thats what works for me even when others are complaining about the fishing..

If you get above the white river you might also keep your eyes out for some mid-day PMD's
