Default Hello and electric motor question.

As my two year old daughter said while stabbing the pencil in her big sister's fish tank, "Me fishin daddy, me fishin."

I've enjoyed looking over everyone's shoulder so much that I thought it was time to join. I have two daughters, 2 and 6. Live just a stones throw away from the N. Santiam river and was raised on fishing and hunting. I've been out doing a lot of fishing on the N. Santiam lately just not much catching.

Enjoy just about any type of fishing. Usually its with my father who own's the boats and he's kind enough to let me tag along. I'm lucky to have free run of his driftboat and am usually on the Mehama to Stayton run. Which should be getting better by the day right now. I just bought my first boat yesterday! A 14' aluminum outboard. Something to take my girls for rides on Detriot and get them involved in fishing as much as possible. Thank you to Jennie for a great site and all the interesting info from everyone.

We just returned from Brownlee on a family trip. I was telling my father about ifish and he asked me to post a question. He is going to put an electric motor on his 21' Duckworth. He is thinking of a 50lbs thrust, 12 volt, bow mount. Primarly becuase he doesn't want an extra battery to hassle with. He is unsure what shaft length to get. Any recommendations from the members out there on what would be the best set up?

Thank you.

Welcome to ifish, me fishin. I don't know about bow mounted electrics but I hope you get a chance to let that 6 yr old catch some shad.

Good luck and good fishing.

Hey me,
Welcome out of the shadows! All I can give you is my opinion and you can take it for what its worth. 50lbs of thrust is not going to be adequate for many situations I would go for the most amount of thrust offered by Minnkota. Now here's the kicker, I believe that a fellow guide friend of mine still has Minnkotas Genesis for sale...it is a bow mount completely foot controlled even stow and deploy with an autopilot built in I believe. He has only used it maybe 5 or 6 times if that is something you might be interested in I can find out a price...I know new they are in the $1600.00 neighborhood.

MF,
I have a 55 lb on my 18 ft sled and it will push it along at about 10+ mph. Think Minn Kota recommends this 55 for up to a 21 ft boat. Hope this helps.

MF,

The 65 lb. thrust on my 18' sled is plenty, as I do a lot of bass fishing with it. I went with a 54" shaft Power Drive. Just remember that with a Power Drive it is probably best to error to the longer than the shorter because you can adjust the depth of the prop anyway.

My 5 year old daughter and I troll all over the lakes for trout with just the electric. Wish you and your kids the best.

Thanks Mad.

The use will be working the banks at Brownlee looking for crappie. He has a kicker on it for the rivers and bays salmon fishing. I think he started having dreams watching the other guys over there being able to use both hands to fish instead of fishing with one and running the kicker with the other. I think he is looking to have just enough power to hold it in the wind. But I'll pass the information on to him.
