Default Where To Hunt In Silver Lake Unit??

Hello,
My hunting party drew silver lake tags this year and we were over there last weekend doing some scouting. we only saw three deer. does anyone have any good ideas where we could go hunting? we were scouting the Hagar Mountain & Dead Indain Mountain areas and around the burn. we have never hunted this unit and it would be nice if we had some areas to check out before the season starts.

Thanks Mike

I have hunted that unit quite a bit. Not in the past 3 seasons though. But there are some good spots up there. I've heard some good stuff about Dead Indian so that might be an area you want to try. You might find a lot of other hunters up near the burn. But most of the ones we came across while hunting up there were driving the roads. It was always nice to hear about how they shot nice bucks while road hunting while we were busting our butts and not having any luck!

Do you have a map of the unit yet? I think a lot of the area around Dead Indian Mtn is private property? I will double check myself but you may want to find out yourself.

Yes I have a map of the area and it looked pretty good. I was marking every where we went with my Rino 530 GPS. I love it.

I high lighted all the areas on my map plus marked it on my GPS.

Thanks Mike

If you're feeling crazy drop over the side of winter rim and hunt some of the benches and rimrocks. There are some spots where you can get down there but it might be tough packing out. There are cattle all over up there along winter rim. I like to call the bio down in lakeview and chat with him about deer pops. He's a good guy and very helpful. It's a call worth making.

We used to camp at the entrance to Bear Creek Wilderness and we took some nice 4 and 5 points along the rimrock.

We have seen a lot of deer where the bitterbrush turns to timber on the east side of Thompson Revsevior. Especially in the evenings. this has been a few years back but might be worth looking at?

I don't know where you would fill your tag but there is a steakhouse just outside of the town of Silver Lake that has only two menu items; a 28oz steak or a whole chicken. If you eat there the day before the season you won't have to grocery shop for 3 or 4 days.

I would throw out a caution about hunting Yamsey. It does get spot lighted alot. Alot of that area does.

As far as the Cowboy dinner tree, I highly reccomend it.

Cowboy dinner tree........ Yep top 5 best meal I have ever had.
Deer hunting anywhere close to hwy 97 and closer to a certain town the pop. are down. But there are good genetics and some nice bucks still. We just saw 3 "really" nice bucks just north of the Casino on our way out of town. Totally blew me away.

LOL, yup, seen that ALOT out there especially most of the area west of the county line. And why do you think there are usually fresh tracks, after a rain or a frost, and beer cans on most roads by 7am, every morning.

We hunt Silver Lake every year (Rifle/General), and kick off the week with dinner at the Cowboy Dinner Tree. It's the biggest steak or chicken meal I've ever seen. We then eat the leftovers for the next two days. Be sure to get reservations if you decide to go.

As far as hunting goes, it's pretty sparse out there, so don't have much to add. The area's mentioned are worth a look. In the four years that I've been going we've gotten 3 deer total, for about 5 hunters each year. My family has hunted there for decades though and used to do much better in past years. There's also lots of road hunters. The good news is that it's a big unit, a long ways away from the cities with lots of area to cover, and if you give yourself enough time, you'll see deer.

Good luck.
