Why do you hunt?

"Uhhhhhhhhhhh,,,,,,,,,,,,, its a long answer", was my answer.

So,,i know she's just jackin with my head but it worked, it got me thinking. Why do I hunt? I kinda know the answer but its hard to put into words.

My question to you'all now is,, Why do YOU hunt?

I agree w/ Phil. I simply point to the freezer and the package of meat unthawing on the counter for dinner.
I was told by my wife last year that the freezer was getting low and I needed to do a little more Hunt'nFish to fix the situation.
Ok sweety, will do.

But to be honest that is only a small part of why we hunt & fish. I think it's just because we like being outdoors.
I also think it's in our genes. Just like how we love to sit and stare at a campfire in silence.
Man has been doing it for tens of thousands of years and we just feel right and at peace when we're doing it.

Whatever the reasons, I simply enjoy it.

When I was younger the hunt was all about filling my tag. Now that I am older and wiser . I still hunt for the meat but even that is a bit cheesy of answer because for the amount of money spent on a lb of meat it is very costly although the meat is good and its organic.

I hunt because its in my blood I love being out to see the sun rise and smell the morning. I enjoy the comrade of the guys I hunt with and the jokes. The highs and lows of the hunt. The anticipation of every morning is what keeps me going I never know what the day will bring. I walk all year to stay in some what shape for hunting it motivates me 12 months out of the year.

Because I have too much excess cash and needed a way to dispose of some of it.

Seriously though. It's because I'm a carnivore and enjoy my place at the top of the food chain. It's because I love the places which my quarry calls home. It's because I'm a little bit of an adrenaline junky and nothing gets my heart pumping quite like that moment when the the prey is in my sights.

I'm sure there are other reasons but these are the top three....and that's all I have to say about that.

I too feel you don't have to be in a church to have god listen to you. Being out in the woods helps to keep me centered and gets my kids away from all the crap in the world that is trying to drag them down the wrong path. It's not about filling the tag, it's about the spark and fire I see in my boys eyes. It's about our pointer on a hard point or even better a far out hard honor point, it's about our boys and our pointer working together to corner a running pheasant and making a sweet shot. These are just some of the reasons I keep doing it. Hunt

To Enjoy Nature
To Occasionally fill the freezer
For the Solitude
To have a reason to get outside
For the adrenaline rush when the animal walks into view without it knowing you're there.
To observe animals in ways no non-hunter can
For the exercise
Because I love campfires

To Enjoy the World the way it was intended to be enjoyed. Concrete Free.

My girlfriend actually recently wrote a blog similar to the question...a question she answers for herself though her, limited, experiences hunting so far.

To sum it up;
"Learning how to hunt hasn’t made me a better hunter – it’s made me a better steward, a better Oregonian, and a better person."

Its that primal instinct. Stalking and killing an animal involves all your senses. It brings us closer to who we are than anything else.

I hunt for the split second before the trigger is pulled. When all the effort and hard work has come together with an opportunity at a game animal.

One thing I have learned is that no matter how hard I try I can not explain it to a person that doesn't hunt. They just don't get it.....

Cheers,

Adam

A quote forn Jim Zumbo
nov 2006 why we hunt
CAMERAS DONT CUT IT
Some people have asked why I must hunt with the objective of killing the quarry. Why, they wonder, cant I simply walk the woods with a camera and record my encounters with wildlife on film? The answer is simple: to do so is not hunting. A photographer is an observer; a hunter is a participant in the outdoor drama. I firmly believe that those of us who choose to hunt are predators. Let us make no excuses for that definition. Our prehistoric ancestors hunted, and so we follow those traditions. In my view, the chase is an essential part of my very being, whether its tracking a bull elk in powder snow, or shivering in a blind waiting for a flock of geese to commit and drop into my decoys. Nothing dies easily in the woods. Animals perish, with or without our help. Most of them die violently and painfully, perhaps in the talons of a hawk, in the jaws of a coyote or as a victim of starvation or disease. My kill is quick and humane. And make no mistake, hunting by humans is natural. Man has always hunted. Dont let anyone convince you otherwise.

I hunt and fish to get out in the wilderness and away from everything else. Successful or not, every day is still amazing as long as you come out healthy.

For those of you that hunt and fish ONLY put meat in the freezer, isn't it cheaper to buy it?

The answer is simple: to do so is not hunting. A photographer is an observer; a hunter is a participant in the outdoor drama. I firmly believe that those of us who choose to hunt are predators. Jim Zumbo is wrong. I don't hunt big game much anymore. I think I was always a meat hunter. I never traveled very far to hunt, got cost prohibitive. I've always lived within a few miles of places to hunt, here out my back door. But I don't need the meat any more and my son is wrapped up in his own life so usually when I go out, I just take a camera. I can take home the trophy and leave the animal.

I've been to a deer camp once in my life, I was about 15 and it was upstate New York with my step dad.

I hunt birds mostly to watch the dogs any more. Bird hunting has almost always been simply sport hunting for me, I like the dogs!
I might add that hunting is about finding and getting in position for the kill. After the hunt come's the kill and that is just killing. Killing is easy, hunting is tuff. If you get close enough for a good shot with a camera, the kill would be a breeze!

I read a story a long time ago about a man who lived a very full and rewarding life as an outdoorsman. He had lots of trophies to remind him of his successful hunts. He was at a point where he didn't really want to or feel the need to kill anymore but didn't want to lose a part of his life that he loved so much. He decided to mount a camera to a rifle stock and attach the shutter mechanism to the trigger. He then hunted and captured his trophies on film.

It is ALL of it for me....The cool mornings, the anticipation, the primal instinct that runs in our blood, the highs, the lows, the smells in the air, the ability to observe all sorts of creatures in their natural habitat (including bugs, squirrels, birds, moss...everything) the natural elements (weather changes), the physical effort required, the development of a specialized skill that few people ever have the chance to even experience, the setting sun, the dew in the morning, the sounds of far away bugles, the escape, the opportunity to think clearly, the ability to reflect on life.....ALL OF IT and a thousand things more!

It is just a part of who I am....The more I hunt, the better I get at it, but the less desire I have to kill things.....makes for a strange mental journey....one that I will never tire of trying to understand.

Yes, VERY interesting comments.
I've hunted, fished & done some trapping in Oregon for over 40 years.

For me Jim Zumbo nailed it. I hunt, because it's IN me. I am a predator. I read a quote some where YEARS ago (this may be wrong, but...), "to hunt is not to have killed, but to kill is to have hunted"....or something like that.
The kill, to me, is the LAST reason I'd hunt. I've never met anyone who liked to kill, but as Baltz said, it's the only way to get the meat. Don't get me wrong, I have a steer grazing in a field that will be beef come November and I had rare Venison backstrap for dinner tonite. It's just that, for me, the moment of the "kill" isn't why I'm out there.
You'll also note that he said nothing about, "filling the freezer". The wild game meat is great, but there are WAY more cost effective ways to fill a freezer. NONE that are more fun & fullfilling, but.....

Obviously we are all out there for different reasons. ALL of them justified ( within the law). Whether we hunt for meat, sport, to watch the dogs work, manage wildlife, control predators. Bow or gun we are ALL hunters
Wow, I got long winded, sorry

i would venture to say the majority would agree, taking pictures is not hunting. each to his own though.

I am with don fischer on this point. For me the moment that i squeeze the trigger\release is the moment of let down for me. The excitement I get is not from the death of the animal or the fact that i caused the death of the animal.
The intense joy i got last saturday is something i feel dozens of times every year after i track, spot, stalk, get so close that i can smell them and take a picture of a beautiful wild animal in the most beautiful and natural of surroundings.

Every time I hear a bull or four bulls bugling in some high up canyon the hair on the back of my neck stands up with excitement wether its aug 10th or sept 10th. Either way its amazing and powerful.

To be honest, I don't even have to be looking at an animal to feel this way. I feel this way no matter where i'm at or or what i'm looking at in the field, just knowing that there COULD be something really amazing just over the next ridge or around the next bend keeps me going.

If i didn't eat elk, deer, bear, or fish every night of the year I would carry a camera instead.

(EXCEPT FOR KITTIES KILL EM)

I've got a saying..."It's all fun and games, then you pull the trigger." But it only works if you connect. I like the white packages that come with it as well.

When I have been asked this it has made me think and I pretty much agree with Hunt'nfish. If you go on to imagine living your life without hunting , and you are like me, it will be hard to imagine happiness in that imagined life. What a bleak existence it would be to live without it.

Here is why I hunt.

Deer-3 or 4 eggs over medium, enough sausage links to raise my bad cholesterol 35 points, hash browns, toast & jelly. A cup of coffee, my feet propped up on the fire pit rocks....everyone else in camp doing the same.

Elk-The first time was for fun. The rest have been revenge.

Ducks-It is a proven scientific fact that it is cruelty to animals if you have a lab and don't let em fetch ducks. It's just the humane thing to do.

Geese-Sky rats need killin too.

Antelope-I willl never hunt speed goats. I live in Oregon and am 2 points behind the curve.

Goats & Sheep-C'mon powerball!

Bears-Self defense & rugs.

Cougar-They deserve to be shot for what they did to the deer populatin.

Rodents-If you have ever seen an organized gopher attack, you would understand the need to kill as many as possible. If they get much time to figure out an attack plan, they will likely take over the world Dr. Evil style.

Crows-Practice for big game season. If you can hit a crow, you can hit an elk.

Roosters-Cause there is a farm in Iowa that I have access to.

Mother Chukkers-See elk.

Because my father hunted, and my grandfather, and a thousand grandfathers before him. I hunt because I am.

A little of all the above, not that overly infactuated with watching animals die anymore, but still enjoy the challenge, eating and time with friends.
I am a lot like Don Fischer, nothing makes me happier than a day in the field with my dog (s). They make the best partners.

[QUOTE=walkwalk;3276986]A quote forn Jim Zumbo
nov 2006 why we hunt
CAMERAS DONT CUT IT
Some people have asked why I must hunt with the objective of killing the quarry. Why, they wonder, cant I simply walk the woods with a camera and record my encounters with wildlife on film?

plus film don't taste good haha

Because God says I was made that way...see Genesis 1:26 and 1:28.

Plus all the other reasons everyone stated.

I really think hunting and fishing is why I have a good job and am not homeless. If there was not hunting and fishing I see no reason to continue the struggle.

If we were lions or wolves or sharks, would we be asking ourselves this question (in a Disney-animals-can-talk kinda way)?

NO. It's just what we DO!

I bet if we thought about it we could attribute the increasingly worthless human population to the lack of hunting and need to cultivate our own food. From there, we quit having to use our wits. We quit having to work for what we have. We started expecting someone else to provide it for us. We invented skateboards and cell phones. It all makes sense to me.
