Boater Safety Course - Any Suggestions?
I need to take the boater safety course, any recommendations? What about the online course, or is it advisable to go to a class? What are you experiences?
Any advise apprectiated, salmon are coming, and I need to get the first springer blood in the boat!
I normally bank it, but now I work near OC, so it's time to learn how to boat some springers!

Re: Boater Safety Course - Any Suggestions?
I took the class online and thought it was pretty good. I considered myself pretty savve prior to taking the course/test, but it was an excellent review and of course, I learned some new things as well.
The only real disadvantage is that you can't ask questions. That said, most of it is pretty simple and wouldn't necessarily warrant questions.
Here is the link to an online course.

Good luck

Re: Boater Safety Course - Any Suggestions?
I just read in the local paper that the Yamhill county Sheriff's office is having a class in McMinnville (good job Sheriff's office!!). The only cost is the card ($10). I took mine online last year, really pretty easy, you can even leave the test to look at the material if needed. Look HERE
for the test.
Oops, got beat on that one.........(same test site as above).
Good luck,
Scott

Re: Boater Safety Course - Any Suggestions?
SKP...if you just want to comply with the law, go on line ( http://www.boatus.org/onlinecourse/oregoncourse.htm) and take the test (basically open book) on your own time at no cost. Print your certificate at the end and you're good to go.

Re: Boater Safety Course - Any Suggestions?
actually after you pass the on-line test, you then have to send the certificate and $10 (I think $10) to the marine board who will then send you your "card"
Without the card you can be fined.

Re: Boater Safety Course - Any Suggestions?
In referrence to the online course, note the last line:
This course is offered FREE of charge. Upon successful completion with a score of 80% or better, you may request a certificate be sent to you OR you may print out a certificate.

Re: Boater Safety Course - Any Suggestions?
"Boaters 40 and younger must now carry a boater education card when operating powerboats (including personal watercraft or any motorized watercraft) greater than 10 hp. Law enforcement officers are issuing citations for non-compliance with the Mandatory Education Law. The citation fines have increased to $94."
and
"Those who successfully complete an approved course are issued a certificate of completion which is the first step in obtaining your boater education card ."
failure to carry the boater education card is when you can get a ticket
see O.S.M.B. web site

Re: Boater Safety Course - Any Suggestions?
online, study , then take the free test. you still have to pay for the boaters card. There is some good stuff to know, so learn it, it could prevent a problem in the future. I took it, passed, felt good to get it done and out of the way.

Re: Boater Safety Course - Any Suggestions?
You can take the BoatOregon course at http://www.boat-ed.com/or/ and pay the 15 for the test and an additional 10.50 to have them automatically submit for the boater's card AND you get the opportunity to print out a temporary boater's card that is good for 60-days(I'd need to go look at it to verify) while waiting for the real card to show up. You sign the temp card, it has your information on it and has a code on it that I assume can verify it's legitimacy and you are good to go.

Re: Boater Safety Course - Any Suggestions?
If you want to get more comprehensive, Aux Coast Guard puts on good navigation and boater safety classes. Run during the winter so it does not cut into your fishing time.

Re: Boater Safety Course - Any Suggestions?
SKP,, get the book, you can get it at the Marine Boad on Center St in Salem. Take the online test and you can use the book while doing it. Once completed and passed, follow the instructions, pay the fee online via debt card and you can print a temp license (card) which will be good until you get the card in the mail. I had mine in a week.

Re: Boater Safety Course - Any Suggestions?
Do the boatus.org test online. Just make sure you register for the Oregon state test, which is 75 questions. The 50 question test won't qualify you for Oregon.

Re: Boater Safety Course - Any Suggestions?
I don’t live in Oregon, but I thought it would be a good refresher course. I had no problems with the test.
The one I did not understand was the one backing in the water with hot wheels; if your wheels are hot then you must have some bearing problems.

Re: Boater Safety Course - Any Suggestions?
From: http://www.boatoregon.com/Education/questions.html
Is anyone exempt from needing a boater education card?
Yes. Exemptions apply to:
Out-of-state and foreign visitors: If they will be boating in Oregon for less than 60 days or hold a boater education card from another state.
Boaters with a current Coast Guard Boat Operator License: Boaters such as guides and barge operators who hold a current Coast Guard Boat Operator License are exempt from the requirement.
Commercial Fisherman: Boaters who hold a current commercial fishing license do not have to carry a boater education card when operating recreationally but do need to carry their commercial license or documentation.
Non-certified, supervised adults: The law allows a non-certified adult to operate a power boat IF under direct supervision of an adult 16 or older who is carrying a boater education card.
New Boat Buyers: Buyers have a temporary exemption, valid for up to 60 days.
Boat Renters: Renters will be exempt, but must complete a dockside safety checklist.

Re: Boater Safety Course - Any Suggestions?
Boat renters by no means should be exempt.
My son is 9 years old and he is learning to operate both of my boats. He is praticing to take the test when he is old enough. He could pass the test today!!! So why would anyone be exempt?
It's simple! It's commen sense!

Re: Boater Safety Course - Any Suggestions?
Thanks guys! Looks like the online course is worth it, not because it's free, but because it's a quality course.
I'm going to give it a shot, hopefully after the honey do list is completed today. I need that kitchen pass for Monday! I'm going springer fishing for part of the day, fish on!
