Default Coon island shad?

My 5 year old nephew caught his first fish last weekend (trout) and he is all excited about
fishing. Thought I might take him some place were he could catch a few shad ( want to stay
away from the hustle and bustle of OC). Can any one tell me if there are still good numbers of
shad at coon island? I would appreciate your input.

I tried it for a little while on Sunday afternoon and did not see anything much going on. If you Have a boat go put in at Chinook landing and go up stream to the mouth of the Washougal . There is a ramp on the Washington side just up stream of the Washougal also. There has been a good bite going on there for a while  .

Fished just above Coon Island on Saturday. Boated about 20 shad in 2 hours. Boat outside of us got 1 and the one inside got 3 during the same time. Must have been in the groove!

Anchored in about 19 feet of water. Used smallest Dick Nite spoon, brass with red butt. 40" dropper and 48" leader, 2 - 3 ounces and backed it out 40 - 50 feet. Had 2 doubles and a triple.

Had two youngsters with me that had never been in a boat or on a serious fishing trip. They were shad magnets and had a ball - the guys next to us didn't.

I'll be there again this weekend with a new young crew.

I agree wish Chromer.
Just above coon island is a house boat with a small home built airplane. We were anchored about 40 yards out from the plane.

If your not catching fish move. Shad starting hitting real good about 30 minutes after the tide change.

Good luck!
